Genie and her mother, Yumico

At the age of nine years old, Eugenie “Genie” Clark fell in love with fish. She would explore the New York Aquarium every Saturday while her mother was at work. Genie’s mother, Yumico, encouraged her daughter’s passion, buying her a 15-gallon fish tank for Christmas.

As Genie’s menagerie grew - soon expanding beyond fish to include salamanders, a horned toad, snakes, and a baby alligator - so did her fascination. She kept methodical records, documenting details about all of her animals including their scientific names, dates, and behaviors.
