Description
One of the most popular flowering cherries, known for its upright, vase-shaped form and flamboyant spring display.
Leaves: Alternate, simple, 3–5 inches long, ovate with long-pointed tips and serrated edges; emerge reddish-copper, mature to dark green, and turn orange-bronze in fall.
Bark: Thin, brownish-gray with prominent horizontal lenticels; does not peel as much as other cherries.
Twigs: Stout, reddish-brown, smooth.
Flowers: April–May; large (2-inch), "double" blossoms (containing 30–50 petals each) that look like small pink carnations; grow in drooping clusters of 3–5.
Fruits: Rarely produces fruit; if present, they are small, inconspicuous black drupes.
