Ruth Breindel joined the Moses Brown faculty in 1985, embarking on a distinguished 30-year career as a scholar and teacher in the Upper School. A specialist in classical languages and humanities, Ruth shared her vast knowledge with students through courses in Latin, Greek, Linguistics, and Mythology. She was highly regarded for her academic depth and her ability to bring the ancient world to life, challenging generations of students to find modern meaning in classical texts. Upon her retirement in 2015, Ruth left behind a legacy of intellectual rigor and a community of scholars who were deeply inspired by her passion for language and history.

Description
A hardy tree with a light, airy canopy that casts dappled shade; wild varieties often have large thorns.
Leaves: Alternate, pinnately or bipinnately compound, 5–8 inches long, with many small, oval leaflets (½–1 inch long).
Bark: Dark gray-brown; breaks into long, narrow, scaly plates with outward-curving edges.
Twigs: Zigzagging, lustrous, reddish-brown.
Flowers: May–June; small, greenish-yellow, fragrant clusters hanging from leaf axils.
Fruits: September–October; long, flat, twisted seed pods (12–18 inches long), dark brown, containing hard seeds and sweet pulp.
Other Common Names
Sweet Locust, Thorny Locust (cultivated varieties are often "Sunburst" or "Shademaster" and are thornless/seedless).
