A pillar of the Lower School since 1981, Kathleen Ryan has dedicated over three decades to shaping the foundational years of Moses Brown’s youngest learners. Her influence has been instrumental in the development of students ranging from pre-primary through fifth grade, where she is known for paving a clear path toward academic and personal success. Kathleen’s tenure is defined by her role as an inspirational mentor and a pivotal point of guidance, helping children navigate their formative years with confidence. Description
A graceful, fast-growing deciduous tree with a wide, spreading habit and a rounded, vase-shaped canopy.
Leaves: Alternate, simple, 2–5 inches long, oval to oblong, with finely serrated edges; dark green in summer, turning yellow to bronze in fall.
Bark: Smooth and gray-brown when young, featuring prominent horizontal lenticels (pores); becomes slightly scaly or fissured with age.
Twigs: Slender, reddish-brown, and smooth.
Flowers: March–April; spectacular clusters of 5-petaled, fragrant, white to pale pink blossoms that appear before the leaves.
Fruits: Small, round, black drupes (cherries) appearing in early summer; bitter and primarily eaten by birds.
