In this lesson, we are looking at the work of famous artist Gustov Klimt, who used lots of patterns in some of his work. Watch the video to find out more.
You will need:
A4 or larger Cartridge Paper Pencils Black Felt tip Pens
Image head and shoulders cut out Printed Template( if not using cut-outs - 1 per child)
Scissors Glue Sticks Gold / silver metallic pens
When you have your person on the paper, section off the background as shown in the video and start drawing your patterns. Use plenty of detail and then go over them using black felt tip pens. Draw hard thicker lines between each section. If you have taken care, you may use my very special gold and silver pens (ask your teacher to get them) to add some detail to your picture. Don't colour in large sections using these pens.
Please do not shake the pens as they will leak everywhere and spoil your drawing. Make sure the pen lid is put on immediately after use and put back into the box.
Activity 1
Watch the video about how Klimt used patterns in his work.
Watch how you can create your own art in the style of Klimt using a cut out of a person. It could be a photo of yourself or a print out.
You will need A4 or larger cartridge paper. Carefully cut out your head and shoulders image and using a glue stick place it on your paper making sure that you have enough room to draw the shoulders and body.
If you don't have this you can use the template from the image below which is taken from a famous painting called Adele.
For ideas about patterns that you might want to use, take a look at the slideshow.
You will need:
Cartridge paper Pencils Paint Black felt tips
You are going to draw and paint your own Tree of Life art. Make sure that you draw double lines for the branches so that you can paint inside them using my special fine brushes. No need to add the pattern work until you have painted your tree and it has dried. You can include some things that are special to your life on your tree.
Remember to use only the tips of these brushes and not to squash them and separate the bristles. The watercolour paint trays need to be kept clean and don't add too much water. Do not mix the colours as others will be using them after you . Carefully paint the background of your work using a darker colour of your choice . Choose from the yellows and oranges for the tree. You can choose your own colours for the flowers and patterns at the bottom.
When your paint is dry you need to outline your branches using black felt tip and add the pattern work on the branches. If you are really careful you might be able to add a few special touches with my gold metallic pens again.
Please make sure that all shared equipment is clean, put back in its correct place and ready to use for another class.
