In today's technological age, going on the Internet is as commonplace as getting a glass of milk from the refrigerator. However, unlike getting a drink from the fridge, using the internet can be very dangerous.
Many kids (and many adults!) use the internet without giving much thought to the consequences of their actions while they're online. People often give too much information out to strangers, post inappropriate pictures or comments that last for much longer than they realize, or talk to total strangers without knowing anything about them. These actions can open a person up to scams, legal trouble, cyber-bullying, or dangerous encounters.
Many of the links below will be reviewed throughout the year in media classes. However, students (and adults!) are encouraged to explore these resources to make sure they are making safe and intelligent choices while they're exploring the internet.

TV and movies usually create "bad strangers" that are ugly, mean, men wearing dark clothing, like the Webville Outlaws in the NetSmartz videos. However, we know that we cannot tell if a stranger is "bad" or "good" just by looking at their hair, smile, clothing, gender, or eyes. In the faces to the right, there is no way of telling if the person is good or bad just by looking at them. That's why we follow the rule: Don't talk to strangers!
