TLS Books - Tlsbooks offers numerous worksheets for students in preschool-sixth grade. This site features thousands of printable worksheets as well as coloring pages, teacher resources, puzzles, and reading tips.
Wonderopolis - Each day, this site asks an intriguing question and explores it in a variety of ways. This approach both informs and encourages new questions, sparking new paths of wonder and discovery in family and classroom settings.
It's a non-fiction, high interest, free website that has videos and short read passages with some multiple choice questions.
Book Hive - A great resource for finding books that you will like that was created by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library in Charlotte, NC! Here, you can search for books by genre or grade level. Most records in the database include a picture of the book's cover, summary, number of pages, and reader reviews. This site also has videos of master storytellers doing what they do best - telling stories - as well as a lot of other fun literature-based activities for kids of all ages.
Kids Reads - This is a site that offers many book reviews, book trivia, and games! Just for kids! There's a link to learn about authors in an interview format and highlights of "Books Into Movies". Children can find their way easily around this site to read book reviews, a monthly newsletter, or even contact AOL/Time Warner (which owns the site) with questions. Short interviews with authors are posted for site visitors to "Meet the Author" and there's a feature in which one can write to one's favorite author.
Printable Stories for Kids - Short stories on a variety of topics that can be printed out and read by students at home.
Read Write Think! - International Reading Association (IRA), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the MarcoPolo Education Foundation are the partners for this site with a mission of providing educators and students with access to the high quality practices and resources in reading and language arts instruction through free, Internet-based content. While the focus is literacy, the "Student Materials" section is the highlight which can be extended to other subject areas. The "Materials" are actually interactive online tools for creating comic strips, drama maps, timelines, "staple-less" books, picture maps and much more.
Starfall - Starfall provides 15 stories for emergent readers. In addition, there are games and movies that help teach letters and sounds. Teachers will find free materials that they can use. There's also information for parents and print materials that are available for purchase.
Turtle Diary - Practice "coloring" words with long & short vowel sounds right on the computer! This games helps students practice vowel sounds, reading, colors, and computer skills all at once! The game even says the words for the kids if they are having trouble.
Dr. Seuss Author Study Site - several terrific sites for K-5 students dedicated to this iconic children's author, including Seussville and an awesome vocabulary & character reference site!
Writing Exercises for Upper Grades - This site provides free writing prompts and exercises to help you get started with creative writing and break through writing blocks. Generate random story ideas, plots, subjects, scenarios, characters, first lines for stories and more.

America's Story from America's Library - This site wants you to have fun with history while learning at the same time. Animated Atlas - Here’s a great 10-minute review of the growth of the United States from its beginning after the Revolutionary War until all the states were added, ending with Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. 12 Reasons to Search with "Google Advanced Search"...Even Before Using "Basic Search" - Often, students use inefficient search techniques with Google or other search engines, ending in countless unhelpful and irrelevant results. By teaching students how to conduct an "Advanced Search" in Google, they can easily learn to use the tools for a "Simple Search" (AND, OR, NOT, etc.) properly.
