Unit 2: Moving Forward

Anchored in The Alchemist

Welcome to Honors 10 - Unit 2! This Unit's Objective is...

As students read The Alchemist, they will evaluate the beliefs and worldview at the heart of the novel. What does the novel mean by destiny? What types of treasure does it want its readers to seek? How does it combine Christian, Jewish, Islamic, and Roman religious elements? Why does the novel pair notions of individual destiny with a larger worldview about universal language and alchemy? What elements of the novel resonate with you? In the final writing assignment for this unit, students will use The Alchemist to consider how a character’s personal journey is influenced by the actions and lessons of others.
