Design and Modeling (DM) provides students opportunities to apply the design process to creatively solve problems. Students are introduced to the unit problem in the first activity and are asked to make connections to the problem throughout the lessons in the unit. Students learn and utilize methods for communicating design ideas through sketches, solid models, and mathematical models. Students will understand how models can be simulated to represent an authentic situation and generate data for further analysis and observations. Students work in teams to identify design requirements, research the topic, and engage stakeholders. Teams design a toy or game for a child with cerebral palsy, fabricate and test it, and make necessary modifications to optimize the design solution.
ONE TRIMESTER
7th Grade Required Elective
This is a one-trimester course for seventh grade students. In this course, students will get an overview of many technology tools that they can use to communicate ideas and produce work digitally. Topics include: Digital Art & Design, Safe Online Surfing, Digital Citizenship, 3D Design, Digital Storytelling, Coding & Computer Science, Design & Animation and Game Design.
FULL YEAR
7th or 8th Grade Elective
This course consists of one trimester of each of the following:
Flight and Space
The exciting world of aerospace comes alive through the Flight and Space unit. Students become engineers as they design, prototype, and test models to learn about the science of flight and what it takes to travel and live in space. They solve real-world aviation and space challenges and plan a mission to Mars.
Medical Detectives
Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they collect and analyze medical data to diagnose disease. They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, measure and interpret vital signs, examine nervous system structure and function, and investigate disease outbreaks.
Building For the Future
Students in Building for the Future will explore the world of construction by designing and building real-world solutions using the tools and transferable skills that help industry professionals succeed in their careers. This dynamic unit introduces learners to high-demand skilled trades and empowers them to design sustainable, functional spaces for tomorrow’s communities.
FULL YEAR
7th or 8th Grade Elective
In Digital Media, students will learn to produce and create works of digital media ranging from graphic design, podcasts, and videos as well as the equipment that accompanies each form of media. Journalistic writing, web design, photography and advanced photo editing will also be taught. All students participate in the creation of the MSMS Yearbook as well.
