Shared at SgLDC Virtual Meet 2, 2025
This year I experimented using ShortAns FA in my Malay Language comprehension lessons, and honestly, it has changed the way my students learn and the way I teach. I shared this at the SgLDC Virtual Meet 2, 2025, and I thought I’d pen it down here so more of us can try it out.
Why ShortAnsFA is a Game-Changer
We all know the usual cycle: student write their comprehension answers, pass them up, and then wait for us to mark before they get any feedback. By the time they receive our comments, the learning moment has already slipped away.
With ShortAnsFA, it’s a different story:
Students can check their answers before submitting – which nudges them towards self-monitoring (very aligned with our Digital Literacy and Technological Skills goals)
They get immediate feedback after submitting – no more waiting one week later.
They receive marks AND qualitative feedback – not just “right or wrong,” but explanations they can act on.
This is really assessment literacy in action. Students do not just receive grades; they learn to interpret feedback, adjust, and reflect on their learning. Using an AI-enabled tool like ShortAnsFA, they begin to understand assessment not as an end product, but as part of their learning journey. It’s like having me sit beside every child, coaching them in real time. And the best part? It builds their self-directed learning habits - they start to take responsibility for checking, correcting, and improving on their own.
Chunking + Pictures = Less Stress, More Access
Comprehension passages can overwhelm many of our students, especially in a mixed profile class. So I started breaking the passage into smaller chunks. It immediately felt more doable for students. Then, I layered in visuals. Using ChatGPT, I created simple illustrations for each chunk. This gave weaker readers an anchor, visual learners something to connect to, and stronger students more space to focus on higher-order thinking. It also ties back to Digital Literacy and Technological Skills goals – making learning more accessible, engaging and meaningful for all profiles of students.
Short Videos for Teachers Too!
During SgLDC, I didn’t just talk about the strategy. I also showed it in action through short demo videos.

I know how time-strapped we all are, so these videos were meant to be a plug-and-play inspiration.

How to design this lesson?
Differentiation + Self-Directed Learning in Action
What I love about this approach is how naturally it supports differentiation and builds self-directed learning skills.
Stronger students get stretched because they can refine and justify their answers with instant feedback.
All students are nudged towards independence – they don’t have to wait for me and can take charge of their own learning.
And because the AI-enabled SLS tool provides feedback right away, students are practicing assessment literacy skills continuously. They are not just answering questions. Rather, they are using assessment to learn.
Final Thoughts
Using ShortAnsFA has turned my comprehension lessons from being teacher-driven to being student-driven. My students are more reflective, confident, and excited to monitor their own progress. It ticks so many boxes – DLTS, differentiation, assessment literacy, and promoting self-directed learning. Beyond that, it just makes lessons more joyful. If you’re thinking about trying it, I promise it is worth it ❤
