Chapter 1 - Building Singapore's Identity
Students will learn about the national symbols, national events and places in Singapore that are part of our national identity.
This is a teacher-facilitated resource for Chapter 1 of the Social Studies Primary 5A textbook of the 2020 syllabus. This book explores the rich history and heritage of the Istana of Singapore. Students will follow four young children, Jing Kai, Julailah, Priya and Zulkifli on their adventure as they find out more about how the Istana was built over the span of 150 years.
Students will follow four young children, Jing Kai, Julailah, Priya and Zulkifli on their adventure as they encounter and interact with past and present leaders of Singapore and other individuals who have previously walked through the halls of the Istana.
Students will learn about the key events during Singapore's journey towards independence and Singapore's development as a nation. They will also learn about the significance of our National Symbols in relation to these key events and how they help to build our national identity.
This lesson is designed to support lower progress students in understanding the relevant historical content from Primary 4 Chapter 5 to Primary 5 Chapter 1.
In this two-part lesson, students will interview their classmates and/or family to understand how they relate to the National Symbols of Singapore. Students will also learn to make sense of the data gathered from the interviews and reflect on how the National Symbols are significant in the lives of the people in Singapore.

Students will learn about the different aspects of hawker culture in Singapore. They will also learn about how hawker culture reflects Singapore's national identity.
The activities in this lesson are designed to facilitate Differentiated Instruction (DI).
Chapter 2 - Building Singapore's Defence
Students will learn about the need for defence, Dr Goh Keng Swee, national service and the contributions of national servicemen to Singapore's defence today.

Chapter 3 - Building a Cohesive Society
Students will learn about the importance of racial harmony in Singapore and the people who contributed to promoting racial harmony in Singapore.

Chapter 4 - The Physical Environment of Southeast Asia
Students will learn about the physical environment of Southeast Asia.

Students will learn about Mount Merapi, a volcano in Indonesia. Students will make careful observations on the effects of the volcanic activity of Mount Merapi. They will also process information independently based on the information gathered.
