Students will learn about the national symbols, national events and places in Singapore that are part of our national identity.

This is a teacher-facilitated resource for Chapter 1 of the Social Studies Primary 5A textbook of the 2020 syllabus. This resource is designed to support students who require auditory and visual support to read the textbook. Teachers are encouraged to assign this resource only to students who require additional support in reading the Social Studies textbook. 

Students will learn will learn the significance of the National Flag, the State Crest and the National Anthem (Majulah Singapura). They will also learn how these National Symbols help to build our national identity.

Students will learn the significance of the National Pledge, the Lion Head symbol and the National Flower. They will also learn how these National Symbols help to build our national identity.

Students will learn that the National Day Parade strengthens our sense of identity as a nation.

Students will find out how Mr Yusof bin Ishak overcame some challenges in his life before he became Singapore’s President in 1965. They will also learn how his values and experiences shaped his beliefs about Singapore's national identity.

Students will learn how past and present Presidents of Singapore have helped to build our national identity.

Students will learn about National Gallery Singapore. You will also learn how common experiences and memories connected to places like National Gallery Singapore help to build Singapore's national identity. 

This book explores the rich history and heritage of the Istana of Singapore. Students will follow four young children, Jing Kai, Julailah, Priya and Zulkifli on their adventure as they find out more about how the Istana was built over the span of 150 years.

Students will follow four young children, Jing Kai, Julailah, Priya and Zulkifli on their adventure as they encounter and interact with past and present leaders of Singapore and other individuals who have previously walked through the halls of the Istana.

Students will follow four young children, Jing Kai, Julailah, Priya and Zulkifli on their adventure as they explore the flora and fauna found on the grounds of the Istana.

Students will learn about the key events during Singapore's journey towards independence and Singapore's development as a nation. They will also learn about the significance of our National Symbols in relation to these key events and how they help to build our national identity. 

This lesson is designed to support lower progress students in understanding the relevant historical content from Primary 4 Chapter 5 to Primary 5 Chapter 1. 

In this two-part lesson, students will interview their classmates and/or family to understand how they relate to the National Symbols of Singapore. Students will also learn to make sense of the data gathered from the interviews and reflect on how the National Symbols are significant in the lives of the people in Singapore.

Students will learn about the different aspects of hawker culture in Singapore. They will also learn about how hawker culture reflects Singapore's national identity.

The activities in this lesson are designed to facilitate Differentiated Instruction (DI).

Students will learn about how hawkers provided for the needs of Singapore during its founding years as a colony. They will also learn about how hawker centres solved the issues faced by street hawkers.

Students will learn about common design features of hawker centres in Singapore. They will also learn about some examples of distinctive hawker centres in Singapore.

Students will learn about the need for defence, Dr Goh Keng Swee, national service and the contributions of national servicemen to Singapore's defence today.

This is a teacher-facilitated extended lesson for P5 Chapter 2 (Period 3). Through perspective taking, students will learn about the importance of National Service in building Singapore's defence.

Students will learn about the importance of racial harmony in Singapore and the people who contributed to promoting racial harmony in Singapore.

Students will learn about Mount Merapi, a volcano in Indonesia. Students will make careful observations on the effects of the volcanic activity of Mount Merapi. They will also process information independently based on the information gathered.

Students will learn how technology is used in the aquaculture industry to ensure a continuous supply of fresh fish in Singapore. 

Students will learn about two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Southeast Asia, Ayutthaya and the Singapore Botanic Gardens. 

Students will learn about the umbrella-making industry, the agricultural practices and clothing worn in Southeast Asia. 

Students will learn the importance of the oil industry to the growth of countries in Southeast Asia. 

Students will learn about the formation of ASEAN, the founding countries and the three pillars of ASEAN.  

Students will learn about the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and how ASEAN member countries benefit from the AEC. 

Students will find out about what the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) does to maintain the political-security of the ASEAN region. 

Students will learn how harvest festivals in the Philippines and Myanmar are celebrated. They will also be introduced to Pongal, a harvest festival in Singapore. 

Students will learn about different types of food that can be found in Southeast Asia. They will also learn to appreciate Southeast Asia for its diversity. 

Students will learn that rice is a staple food in Southeast Asia. They will also learn how rice contributes to the economies of countries in Southeast Asia and how it has influenced Southeast Asian cultures and languages.

Students will learn how education has evolved in Singapore over the past 60 years.

Students will learn how our shared spaces like five-footways, void decks, and integrated developments reflect the ways in which people within a community have interacted over time.
