Roots to Routes: Humanities in Action

grow & glow

The Roots to Routes programme is a three-year talent & leadership development journey that nurtures HUM DoTS students to understand and communicate humanities perspectives from local to global contexts. Beginning in Secondary 2 and extending through Secondary 4, students progress through two developmental stages— Grow, and Glow—while participating in two interconnected tracks: the Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) Docent Programme, which involves planning and implementing an Integrated Humanities Learning Trail at the Gardens for Secondary 1 and/or Secondary 2 G1 Humanities students, and Model United Nations (MUN).

Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) Docents Programme

The Humanities Department’s in-house Docent Training Programme equips Secondary 2 students with skills in effective guiding, public speaking and trail planning. Through training and collaborative planning sessions, students design an engaging Integrated Humanities trail that combine Geography and History. They develop confidence, creativity and leadership while creating meaningful learning experiences for their juniors.

Objectives

Learn the skills and craft of being an effective docent through the docent training programme.
Work in teams to design and lead an Integrated Humanities Learning Trail at the Singapore Botanic Gardens for Secondary 1 G1 students.
Mentor incoming DOTS HUM students in their docent training journey.

Model United Nations Programme (MUN)

MUN, is an educational simulation in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MUN involves and teaches participants researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.

Objectives

Participate in school-based (SMMUN) and external MUN conferences (culminating in THIMUN).
Organise school-based MUN for juniors and guide the next cohort of participants.
