Grammar 1

We Are Learning To (WALT):

•use a colon and a semi-colon 

•use a colon (:) for listing items.

•use a semi-colon (;) to join two complete sentences.

Example 1- Colon

There were other animals already living in this safe environment: birds, monkeys, hippopotamuses, tortoises and deer. 

Example 2 Semi-Colon

He was not happy to be rescued; he appeared angry and confused. 

Summary

•The second noun/ noun phrase tells us something more about the first noun/ noun phrase, e.g., its identity or its qualities.

•We use commas to separate the nouns/ noun phrases that give extra information from the rest of the sentence.
