The Project Pitch Competition challenged teams to identify a specific challenge related to one of the four dimensions of food security: food availability, food access, food utilisation and food stability. Teams then developed a proposed solution to address their chosen challenge and communicated their ideas through an infographic poster and presentation.

Beyond presenting their ideas, teams had to demonstrate the originality, practicality and effectiveness of their proposed solution, supported by accurate knowledge and logical reasoning. Participants were also expected to respond to questions and feedback from the judging panel.

Project FoodBridge explores how access to fresh and nutritious food could be improved in rural and low-income communities where distance, poor transport infrastructure and supply disruptions can make reliable food access difficult.
Project FoodBridge explores how access to fresh and nutritious food could be improved in rural and low-income communities where distance, poor transport infrastructure and supply disruptions can make reliable food access difficult.
At the centre of the students' proposal is a solar-powered community food hub where fresh produce could be grown locally through vertical farming, stored using solar-powered refrigeration, and collected by residents. The concept is supported by a food-supply shuttle network connecting nearby suppliers and towns with community hubs.

The team also considered how the system could remain accessible to residents with different needs. Their three-tier model provides for digital ordering through SMS or a low-data app, assisted ordering through Village Food Coordinators, and walk-up or voucher access for residents without phones or sufficient financial means.

Rather than relying on a single solution, Project FoodBridge brings together local food production, safe storage, transportation, technology and community support. The proposal also considers how different stakeholders, including local governments, farmers, NGOs, food banks and community members, could work together to keep food accessible even when parts of the system are disrupted.
