Organisation: Mechanobiology Institute, National University of Singapore
Speaker: Dr Yow Ying Ming, Ivan (Alumni)
I hold a Bachelor’s (Hons) in Life Sciences from the National University of Singapore and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, after which I served a four-year scholarship bond with the Ministry of Education Singapore. During this period, I completed a Master of Science in Applied Physics and a Master of Arts in Education Leadership and Management. I later returned to the National University of Singapore to pursue a PhD in Mechanobiology under Professor Yusuke Toyama, studying how apoptotic cell extrusion mechanically influences surrounding tissue. After my PhD, I joined the laboratory of Professor Low Boon Chuan under the A*STAR Industry Alignment Fund–Industry Collaboration Project, where my work led to a venture through the NUS Graduate Research Innovation Programme and the patenting of a cell-culture platform. While developing my deep-tech enterprise, I also completed an Executive MBA and received the NUS Ministry of Education decentralized GAP fund for hydrogel research. My research interests span AI applications in science, myocardial regeneration, radiobiology, and age-related diseases, and I am an Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellow working on AI-assisted microscopy image analysis in mechanobiology for tissue fluidization.
I will be sharing on the current landscape of interdisciplinary research in academia, what are the some paths (both conventional and unconventional) that can be taken to reach to this goal, and help debunk some of the potential myths and beliefs that students may have about this career.
