Hola!
We are a group of teacher leaders and teachers who believe in the power of geographical information system (GIS) maps in helping students to visualize spatial relationships better. We worked together with CPDD colleagues to learn how to create map layers in MOE EduGIS. We then decided to revise an existing storymap in EduGIS on pluvial floods to make the learning deeper through designing the learning through big ideas and driven by engaging geographical questions. We then created a blended learning lesson in SLS and pilot tested the package in 3 schools. The students appreciated the interactive maps and resources. We then presented the project at Geography Symposium in 2021 and in an Instructional Programme Subject Group (IPSG) sharing session in 2022.
Highlights of our Journey ...
Our NLC was formed in Jan 2020. The members strongly believe in the affordances of GIS and were interested to learn how we could create relevant GIS maps using eduGIS for the teaching of A-level geography. We explored existing lessons in the eduGIS MOE library and decided on a topic which is challenging for our students to learn and yet is manageable to be completed within two lessons.
The members learnt how to create maps using eduGIS from Curriculum Resource Development Officers from the Curriculum Planning and Development Division (CPDD) and then proceeded to design our lesson using big ideas and inquiry questions to scaffold the learning of students. We used a range of assessment tools and affordances in the Student Learning Space (SLS) to help students develop a deeper conceptual understanding about the causes, impacts and strategies to manage pluvial floods in urban areas. Students enjoyed the learning through the package and the ability to interact with different map layers enabled students to understand the interplay of factors in causing pluvial floods.
The group eventually shared our learning at the Geography Symposium in 2021 and an Instructional Programme Subject Group (IPSG) sharing session in 2022.
Resources
The group decided to end the NLC but many of the members eventually led or joined other IPSG/NLC groups using big ideas and the affordances of GIS maps.
