More Information about Student Management

1. What is CTSS’s handphone policy? Are students required to keep their handphones away for the entire day? Or can students use their handphones during recess or CCA?

CTSS allows the students to bring their handphones. Permitted use and consequences upon breaching the rules are described below.

The school allows the students to bring their phones to school because increasingly the teachers are using Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools in teaching and learning. The handphone is regarded as a resource that both teachers and students can use to participate in online learning activities. When the teachers need the students to use the phones, the teachers will give them the permission and then they will take out their phones and do the necessary work for learning. CTSS also always has iPads on standby as an alternative digital device for students’ use. Aside from learning purposes as guided by teachers, students are informed that handphones must be placed in their bags and their bags should be placed on the floor.

In addition, students are allowed to use their phones before and after formal curriculum hours, and during their recess. For recalcitrant students who do not abide by handphone rules, CTSS will engage their parents and for some of the students, the school will ban them from bringing their phones or their phones will be retained in school for a stipulated period.

As part of MOE’s Personalised Digital Learning Programme, MOE has announced that by end 2021, every Sec 1 to 3 student will own a personal digital learning device for learning purposes. The school is thus reviewing the handphone use policy so that we can safeguard students’ wellbeing and inculcate a sense of responsibility when using their digital devices. More information will be shared with the parents in 2021.

2. What is your school policy in terms of students' discipline? How does the school manage disciplinary issues such as fights and smoking?

The code of conduct for our students is anchored on our school values – Adaptability, Self-discipline, Perseverance, Integrity, Respect and Empathy. When students have disciplinary issues, our approach emphasises on helping them take personal responsibility for the misbehaviour. We recognise that as our students grow up, they will sometimes make mistakes. It is therefore important for the school to work with the students and their parents to address the misbehavior.

Depending on the seriousness of the offence, the school will set out consequences for the student, which can be in the form of warning, detention, suspension or caning. In addition, our team of well-trained teachers will counsel students, to help them reflect upon the root cause of their misbehavior and understand the impact on others in the school community. They will also be guided to restore relationships with others whom they may have hurt in the course of their misbehavior.

3. What are the rules for ear piercings?

Ear piercing and wearing of ear studs or sticks are not allowed for boys. Girls are only allowed to wear plain gold, black or silver ear studs, and one ear stud per ear.
