Theme 1: e-waste pollution

Problem: Poor Metals Management

Electronic and electrical goods, from phones and computers to refrigerators and kettles, have become indispensable in modern societies and enhance lives. A record 54 million tons of "e-waste" was generated worldwide in 2019, up 21% in five years, the UN's Global E-waste Monitor report found. The situation worsens because they often contain toxic chemicals, and soaring production and waste damages human health and the environment and fuels the climate crisis. Is it important to organise a better collection and recycling system at a lower cost? Justify how recycling would cut the environmental impact of garbage for new metal.

Theme 2: SHARP-SHOOTER

Problem: Deforestation and Community Disturbance by Monkey

Appoint a leader to lead a discussion and talked about the monkey and the veterinarian situation:

Halim works as a veterinarian at the Botanical Garden. Some of his duties are to diagnose and control animal diseases and to treat sick and injured animals. One Sunday morning, he is in a tree aiming a tranquilizer dart gun horizontally at the injured monkey 10 m away, standing in a tree 10 m from the ground. Right as he fires the dart with an initial speed of 40 m/s the monkey is frightened, then it steps off the branch and falls from rest. Luckily, the dart hits the monkey before it reaches the ground. Imagine that someone from your group discussion says:

'I don't see how the dart will hit the monkey. If the monkey drops from the location where the dart was aimed, then when the monkey falls, the dart should sail over its head'.

You know that an effective group discussion will involve all participants and you have to value each member's opinion. Be aware of it, what would you say to this member to convince him the fact that the dart will hit the monkey? To be more convincing of group members, create a monkey shooter and prove them the fact.

Theme 3: green technology

Problem: Increasing of Living Cost Due to Excessive Electricity Use.

Firdaus wants to recharge his handphone at camping site. Unfortunately, he cannot afford to fulfil his desire because there is no source of electricity. Therefore, Firdaus decided to build his own source of electricity from a material that can be easily found. As a friend of Firdaus, he asks you to help him with his project. Using a knowledge on how to generate electricity and information you had learned in previous phase, let us help Firdaus to design a simple handphone charger. In your design, you need to emphasize on:

• material used to create the handphone charger

• the current flow

• the source used to power up the handphone

Theme 4: home appliance

Problem: High Energy Consumption

Studies show from 20 dwellings located in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, 75% occupants use the air conditioner almost every day for about five to six hours per day at the rates of 0.93 kWh/day during daytime and 3.43 kWh/day during night time. As one of the leading air conditioner companies in Malaysia, StayCool.Pvt.Ltd is determined to produce energy saving and portable air conditioners as their latest product. They are interested in the design of an air conditioner that you already made but a few improvements need to be made. As a scientist hired by StayCool, you are required to partake in a research which will then be presented during the board members meeting of the company. A few characteristics such as size, power source and material used must be considered when designing your air conditioner.
