Modern Classrooms Project Mentor Manual
Mentors-in-Training (MITs) will receive a welcome email that includes a self-enrollment link to Mentor Academy. See example below:
Dear {{{Recipient.FirstName}}},
We hope this message finds you well! Thank you again for taking the time and effort to complete the Expert Mentor application. We are thrilled for you to begin Mentor Academy on <<start date>>, where you’ll learn the ins and outs of mentoring and familiarize yourself with the mentee experience in our course platform.
Next steps:
On <<start date>>, navigate to Mentor Academy in Moodle and click the blue "Enroll me" button to self-enroll. Begin the Mentor Academy experience with a welcome from President and Co-founder, Robert Barnett!
Register to join an optional information session on <<Date / Time>> at 6:00 p.m. Eastern. Meet others in your cohort and bring any questions you might have. Register even if you cannot attend; a recording will be shared with you.
Please complete Mentor Academy by <<End date>>. After successful completion, you will be a Modern Classroom Expert Mentor and eligible to start working with your first mentees for the Mentorship Program session that begins January 29.
If you cannot complete Mentor Academy by <<End date>>, please let us know as soon as possible, and we will plan for you to join the <<Next cohort date>> cohort.
We are thrilled to be on this journey with you. Please email credentials@modernclassrooms.org with any questions.
Sincerely,
The Modern Classrooms Team
Yes! You'll be working with the MIT for a shorter period than with mentees, but it is a nice touch to connect with them at the launch of the Mentor Academy session! Find their email address in the pairing email.
Borrow from the MARC to MIT Intro Email template or create your own intro message!
Mentors-in-Training (MITs) will score submissions within their Mentor Academy Feedback Journal, similar to scoring within the Course Companion. The specific content MITs will score depends on the Feedback Journal selection they choose at the end of Mentor Academy module one.
You and the MIT will receive an email following that selection that includes a link to the Feedback Journal. The Feedback Journal will contain the test mentee content and MITs will practice applying feedback "right there" within the Feedback Journal. You will score their feedback also within the Feedback Journal.
There will be clearly marked sections to indicate the MARC and MIT tasks.
The MIT will choose from four options: Elementary, Middle School, High School, or Admin / IC. Once selected, a Feedback Journal will be created and emailed to you both, accessible by link.
Scroll down to Mastery Check #2 to view the test mentee content the MIT selected.
Mentors-in-Training (MITs) will invariably score submissions outside of their gradae band or content areas when supporting mentees throughout the Virtual Mentorship Course. Please encourage the MIT to focus on the feedback structure rather than the content.
Mentor Academy Review Committee (MARC) work is paid as a flat rate. MCP staff will submit activity completion on your behalf when the Mentor Academy mastery checks are marked as completed.
Mentors will earn $75 per completed mastery check for a total of $225.
Leverage your expertise to support MITs. They are the next group of mentors, and your support greatly impacts their success!
Rely on your instincts -- you know what good feedback looks like and how to share it with others.
Refer to Common Submission Feedback as you support the MITs feedback practices.
Err on the side of revision. Seek clarification and context before approving submissions.
Similar to VMP, the Feedback Journal is the primary communication tool. However, we trust your professional judgment. If a call will help to clarify or support as you score mastery checks, please meet with the MIT and submit a time entry.
Occasionally, a MITs submissions are not passing -- even after consulation, resources, and revisions. Perhaps the MIT will benefit from another round of Mentor Academy, either in part or sum. Communicate with MCP staff about the MITs skill set and to reach a decision, together, on the next best steps.
Occasionally, a MIT will not self-enroll to get started in Mentor Academy. Life happens and sometimes plans will change. MCP staff will monitor MITs self-enrollment and progress. MARC members are not obligated to send repeat communication to prompt MITs to get started.
Please email credentials@modernclasssrooms.org or message in Slack. We may add your question to this list!
