The National Librarian’s day – 2024 was celebrated on 14th August 2024, Wednesday, from 10.30 AM to 12.30 PM at the Central Library Reading Hall to commemorate 132nd Birth Anniversary of Padmashri Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. The program started with a prayer song, followed by the lighting of Kuthuvilakku by the Chief Guest and other guests, and then all the dignitaries offered flowers to the portrait of Dr. S.R.Ranganathan. Welcome address delivered by Dr. C. Velmurugan, Chief Librarian, Central Library. He invited all the gathering in the program and spoke about the importance of National Librarian’ s Day.
Inaugural speech delivered by Dr. K.V. Rajasekhar, Dean, MMCHRI. He spoke about the significance of the medical library in the field of medicine, where knowledge is ever evolving and expanding. The library provides the updated information to enable the students and faculty to stay at the forefront of medical advancement. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Anbazhagan, Professor in the Dept. of General Medicine & LAC Committee Coordinator, who spoke about the significance of the celebration of National Librarian’s Day, and he added that the students and faculty make use of the availability of offline and online resources in the central library. The chief guest was Dr. K. Nithyanandam, President of the Madras Library Association, Madras. He delivered his speech about the theme “The Role of the Medical Library and Its Services. He then expressed some of the quotes about the library: “The library is the heart of the institution.” “If you visit the library today, the world will visit you tomorrow,” and “If you bow your head and read me today, you can walk straight ahead tomorrow,” and he also shared his experience with former president Dr. APJ Abulkalam when he was working as a librarian at Anna University, Chennai. He said that Dr. APJ Abdulkalam used to read books in the library till the closing hours of the library every day. The chief guest concluded his speech with the importance of reading books. During the function, the chief guest distributed the best user awards to students and faculty members, those who utilize the library effectively. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Lalitha, Associate Professor, Dept. of Anatomy & LAC Member, and the program was ended with the National Anthem.
