Celebration of National Librarian’s Day and 130th Birth Anniversary of
Padmashri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan
The Department of Library, Meenakshi Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Enathur, Kanchipuram, organized the First National Librarians’ Day Celebration on 12th August 2022 at the PG Reading Hall of the Central Library. As expected, more than 300 students and faculty members participated in this special occasion. The theme of the Programme was “Prince among Librarians: Dr. S. R. Ranganathan.”
The programme was started with a prayer song and the formal welcome address given by Dr. C. Velmurugan, Chief Librarian, and he expressed his best wishes for Happy Librarians’ Day to all gathering and Library Science professionals on this occasion. He welcomed all and mentioned that this the first time which the National Librarian’s Day is celebrated in our College Central Library and followed by Inaugural address by Professor Dr. K.V. Rajasekar, Dean and he appreciated the organizing Secretary and Chief Librarian and Library Coordinator taking such a good initiative of National Librarian’s Day Celebration and he requested all the library users to use library services effectively for their academic and research purposes and career development and followed by Keynote address given by Dr. G. Anbazhagan, Professor and Library Advisory Committee Coordinator and then the portrait of Padmashri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan opening ceremony by Dr. K.V. Rajasekar Dean and offering of floral tributes to the portrait of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan and lighting of candle by the Chief Guest Dr. K.V. Rajaselar, Dean, and followed by Chief Librarian Dr. C. Velmurugan and R. Muthulakshmi, Vice Principal (Academic) and Dr. Mithun Kumar, Vice Principal (Admin), and Dr. G. Anbazhagan, Professor and Library Advisory Committee Coordinator and other dignitaries.
Then a PowerPoint presentation was given by Dr. C. Velmurugan, Chief Librarian, titled “Prince among Librarians: Dr. S. R. Ranganathan.” He explained the detailed history of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan and highlighted some of the significant contributions of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, who is considered the Father of Library Science in India, and mentioned his contribution to the development of Indian Librarianship and the library movement in the country. The chief librarian quoted that S. R. Ranganathan published sixty books, 2000 research articles, and five edited journals in his life and was followed by the Best Library User Award, along with gifts distributed to three faculty members and seven students, including UG, PG, CRRI, etc.
After that, poster presentations were given on different topics by UG and PG students, and the best posters were selected, and certificates and gifts were distributed for them. Moreover, we conducted Book Exhibition 2022 for three days, from the 10th to the 12th of August 2022. More than 300 students and faculty members were visited and purchased some books, and faculty members selected books for our Central Library—nearly 200 books with 11 Lakhs (approximately).
At the end of the inaugural program, the formal vote of thanks was offered by Dr. VagDevi and followed by refreshments and tea.
