If your child has me for period 1 he/she will be using the Wonders curriculum. The focus is Reading and Reading Comprehension Skills. They will read short story passages, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, myths and legends this school year in addition to three read-aloud novels. I will teach them how to pull evidence from several sources for answers to questions. Comprehension skills such as drawing conclusions, cause and effect, compare and contrast will be targeted goals; as well as critical thinking strategies, elements of literature, poetic elements, and text features. Literacy is the key to understanding and comprehending the world around them. Through cooperative learning groups, presentations, and digital media tasks, students will feel empowered to take a more active role in learning. With the variety of educational tools available to students they can make choices that complement their particular learning style. For example students can choose to create a power point presentation, build a model, or even write a poem about the impact the Greek inventions has had on America. By allowing them a choice, their rate of success and confidence will increase.
