Located in Morgantown, West Virginia; Fayette Street is roughly a 0.2-mile-long road that stretches from one end of downtown Morgantown to the other. The Specific site location that will be focused on is where Fayette Street intersects with High street and heads Northwest to the end of Fayette where it leads to the Rail Trail next to the Monongalia River. The goal for this project is to help revamp this section of Fayette Street and form a connection between the downtown area and the river.
There are many features of Fayette street that need to be noted before the design process begins. One important feature is the traffic flow in project area. This part of Morgantown is very dense with buildings and infrastructure which makes it more of an Urban Environment. Traffic is relatively busy through this area as there is a big intersection in the middle of the project location.
At the edge of Fayette along the riverside, there is a trail that runs parallel to the river and is used for running and walking to enjoy views of the river. From the initial site visit, there is a problem with trash and upkeep in this area. Another issue is the noise in the area. With heavy amounts of vehicle traffic, there is heavy noise. Within the site location the sound resonates throughout from the existing buildings. One solution to this issue would be to implement vegetation throughout the site to help limit the noise.
This site will be challenging to alter the layout due to its tight spaces and existing buildings. Some new features that could be implemented are some plants along the sidewalks, provide stairs to help connect the rail trail to Fayette Street, and to implement light features to help Fayette Street feel more inviting.
Fayette Streets topology mains slopes towards the river's edge where it leads to the 100 year floodplain. The section profile gives a good outlook as to how the layout of Fayette Street is.
Fayette Street is relatively narrow throughout the entire site. For the design of the streetscape you'll need to take into consideration the narrowness as well as the traffic patterns through the street.
Initial Concept Plans
There were concept ideas that we worked with help us better understand the site as well as what could be implemented with a tight corridor. The main focus of this site was the River's Edge along the rail trail as well as the Parking lot next to Walnut Street. A concrete pad would be useful along the rail trail to provide a landing or a scenic area of interest. One idea that is most useful for the parking lot would be to implement a food truck area.

Ranta-Tampella has many features similar to this site such as the slope that run towards a body of water as well the narrowness of the design. This site represents how urban spaces and natural spaces can be brought together in unison and create a strong sense of connection.

This design uses many linear patterns due to the site’s layout. Within the streetscape there is many elements that give the street some life. Some examples include the overhanging lights with give an overhead structure to the site as well as the Eastern Redbuds that run along the road.
The riverfront area is the core area of focus in this design. A large concrete pad that overlooks the Monongahela River has many elements such as seating and vegetation boxes to give people a feel that they have reached “the end” of the road. It is also useful to provide a pull off for people using the Rail Trail.
The Area where food trucks will be implemented will be in the existing parking lot next to High Street. This design will be minimal with movable furniture and temporary areas where food trucks can park and serve food. The area where the food trucks will be implemented will be temporarily blocked off so cars and other vehicles will have to use the other access points. The overhead hanging lights will provide a “boundary” for this area to be used. Parking is one important necessity for Morgantown so implementing a design that can transform one area for a different function temporarily and be switched back to its original function is key in this idea.

Eastern Deciduous Forest Associated Plant Community
The Planting Plan for Fayette had to be very particular as there is little room to work with in this design due to the existing buildings as well as existing hardscapes. For the Riverfront portion of the site, I went with some Black gum as the canopy trees along the concrete pad. These trees have a very large canopy that can provide adequate shading as well as aesthetic fall and spring foliage. The purpose of these trees are to provide quality aesthetics all while providing a change from the existing vegetation. The purpose is to provide people from the other side of the river to see this site and provoke curiosity.
