Summer 1
Moving a Robot
Moving A Robot
In this lesson Wren class were introduced to floor robots. We talked about what the buttons on a floor robot might do and then tried the buttons out. We linked an outcome to a button command. We became familiar with the direction command buttons, as well as the ‘clear memory’ and ‘run program’ buttons.
Robots are machines that can do tasks. Robots complete their tasks because they have been programmed to do so by humans: we tell robots what to do.
The Clear (X) button clears the robot’s memory so that it forgets any instructions/buttons that were pressed before.
By the end of the lesson we could predict the outcome of a command. We could match a command to an outcome and could run a command on a device. It was great fun!
This week, we tried following instructions. We had to give a partner clear instructions to follow so that we could safely direct them around the classroom. We realised that we had to make our instructions exact to avoid our friends: if we just said 'Walk forward' they could end up walking into walls and chairs
We all became so involved, and had so much fun, we forgot to take photographs!
This week we used our knowledge of different types of technology to create a film as part of Mission Grove Film Week. The subject for our film was 'Gratitude'. We created a film based around a song which had been made famous by the jazz singer, Louis Armstrong: What a Wonderful World! During the week, the children were storyboard writers, camera operators, artists, voiceover artists, puppeteers and actors.
Action! We had to wait for the signal to start speaking otherwise the camera operator may not be ready to record our work.
We had to speak clearly for the microphone to pick up our voices.
Jonas learnt the script so that he could perform it with expression.
The biggest problem was finding a quiet space! Tanaya, however, was concerned that her performance might disturb the Reception children who were eating lunch in the space next door. What a considerate girl!
We decided we wanted to use puppets to help animate part of the song.
Operating the puppets was tricky. It was hard to remember that we had to hold it to face the camera.
The children created some amazing art work for the film.
Filming on location! We used our trip to Epping Forest to film some of the scenes in our film.
We combined four different commands to make sequences.
I can compare left and right.
I can experiment with 'turn' and 'move' commands to move a robot.
I can predict the outcome of a sequence involving up to 4 commands.
