Year 6
Year 6
In this unit learners explore how data is transferred over the internet. Learners initially focus on addressing, before they move on to the makeup and structure of data packets. Learners then look at how the internet facilitates online communication and collaboration; they complete shared projects online and evaluate different methods of communication. Finally, they learn how to communicate responsibly by considering what should and should not be shared on the internet.
Learners explore what is necessary for effective communication and the importance of agreed protocols. They apply this understanding to IP addresses and the protocols that computers have for communicating with one another. Learners also use a Domain Name Server (DNS) to translate web addresses into IP addresses.
Learning objectives:
To explain the importance of internet addresses
I can recognise that data is transferred using agreed methods
I can explain that internet devices have addresses
I can describe how computers use addresses to access websites
In the first lesson of Computing we learnt about an IP address and what they are, we also learnt that a domain name server is a place on the internet that is responsible for containing all of the internet protocol addresses (IP addresses).

We looked at Domain Name Servers and some IP addresses on nslookup.io, which is a website where you can type different website names, and it will give you their IP address. Each website has their own different IP address.
We also tried typing different website names to find their IP addresses, including our school website:
number10.gov.uk
