Year 4
Year 4
In this unit we learnt more about networks. We learnt that the internet as a network of networks which need to be kept secure. We also found out that the World Wide Web is part of the internet, and we were given opportunities to explore the World Wide Web. Finally, we evaluated online content and decided how honest, accurate, or reliable it was, and understood the consequences of false information.
To describe how networks physically connect to other networks
I can describe the internet as a network of networks
I can demonstrate how information is shared across the internet
I can discuss why a network needs protecting
In this lesson, we learnt that in a network, computers are connected to a switch which passes messages around a network.
We also learnt what a router is.
We then learnt more about how to keep networks safe by completing a short activity.
We had to think about:
Should we share the information?
Why would someone ask us to do this?
Could it put us at risk?
Have a look at our responses.
To recognise how networked devices make up the internet
● I can describe networked devices and how they connect
● I can explain that the internet is used to provide many services
● I can recognise that the World Wide Web contains websites and web pages
In this lesson we learnt about 'routers' and that a route is a way of getting from one place to another, and that there can be many different routes.
For this activity, we had to work out how to get to a certain place. Once we worked out the route we had to see whether we could find an alternative route which used less steps.
The same way computers and networks on the internet are also connected by lots of routers.
We found three different routes to get to B.
The internet delivers many services. One of these services is the World Wide Web. When we access the World Wide Web it goes through wires and routers connected together on the internet.
Files can also be shared on the internet. A file shared on the internet will also be routed through the same system of routers as a website would be, however the service is different. Emails can also be sent over the internet.
We then explored different websites. Have a look at what we did.
Next we looked at the difference between a website and a webpage.
A website is a collection of pages, under one name
A web page is a single page or document on the World Wide Web
Learning objectives
To outline how websites can be shared via the World Wide Web (WWW)
I can describe where websites are stored when uploaded to the WWW
I can describe how to access websites on the WWW
I can explain the types of media that can be shared on the WWW
