Lesson 1: Making a strong positive first impression

Take a look at the young man in the picture. Imagine he is applying for a job in a warehouse. You are the hiring manager. Ask yourself these questions:

Is he dressed appropriately for this interview? Why or why not?
What is your first impression of him?

Be enthusiastic
Show respect
Be open to new ideas
Be positive
Realize it's not all about you
Try to avoid the bad days
Pay attention to your body language

For most interviews, we want to stick with business casual attire. Here are some ideas:

Lesson 4: Dress on a budget

OK, so you might not have the funds to purchase a brand new outfit for an interview. Don't worry! Here are some ways to put an outfit together on the cheap:

Talk to your Employment Specialist! Goodwill can help you put an outfit together using items in our store.
Search for a local non-profit that has a business clothing bank. Many cities have clothing banks specifically for job search outfits.
Borrow from friends or family. Have someone in your life who is your size? Ask if you can borrow an outfit for your big day.
Re-purpose. If you absolutely don't have a pair of slacks, wear clean, black jeans. Do you have church clothes or other formal attire? Use that! Don't stress about these rules- they are really just suggestions. Put together the nicest pieces you have and you will be interview ready.
Get advice. If you're not sure if something is appropriate, ask your Employment Specialist! They are happy to help you look your best!

Here are some other important things to consider when you are doing a video interview:

Think about background noise (use a headset).

Look behind you- what will they see?
Plan for tech issues. Log in early to ensure everything is working.

Don't forget body language and posture.

Lesson 6: Positive Attitude

You may be wondering, "What does my attitude have to do with my outfit?" Well, your attitude definitely isn't something you put on and take off- it's with you always. But like an great outfit, a positive attitude can make you feel good, and it can help you make a great impression. Our attitude has SO MUCH influence over so many parts of us. Watch this video and discuss with the class: What are some ways you build a positive attitude in your own life?

Choose a business where you would like to work. Look up their number online and call them up! Ask them to give some quick advice about what a person should wear to an interview at their business. Discuss your possible script with your instructor before you call. Remember, they may be busy and may not have the time to take your question at that moment. That's ok! Try again later.
