This unit will focus on understanding and creating drum beats and grooves. We will learn how to write them out on a beat map, transcribe them from songs you know, and be able to input them into a digital format.
The document below provides a great description about drum beats and an easy way to break up simple drum beats.
ASSIGNMENT #8 - Enter the drum beat on the following PDF into Soundtrap to see how it sounds. Included below is a video tutorial on how to enter a drum beat using the pattern feature.
ASSIGNMENT #9 - For this assignment you will be entering 2 of the beats from each genre into Soundtrap. These will be entered onto one project. Watch the video in the section above to understand how to enter a beat using the pattern feature!
The PDF below has different grooves written out and the link provided to the left has another look at those rhythms.
The following document provides a look at how to play various instruments on midi keyboard. If you have a midi keyboard connected to your computer you can actually play different instruments straight into the Soundtrap software.
Within music, drum fills are meant to help music transition to another section. Learning how to input and play a simple drum beat.
ASSIGNMENT #10 - Input Fill #1 and Fill #2 from the document below into Soundtrap using the beatmaker feature. Put them both on the same project.
Being able to listen to songs and beats and transcribe them is a great tool for making music. Getting ideas from other musicians combining some of those ideas into your own music has been standard practice for as long as music has been around.
ASSIGNMENT #11 - Transcribe the audio from the Beat Transcription page and enter those transcriptions into a Soundtrap project. You can use the included worksheet to help you write out the patterns.
This section is going to allow you to practice writing and playing various drum grooves. There are 4 different recordings listed on this page.
ASSIGNMENT #12 - You will be taking 2 of the recordings on this page and adding drum grooves to them on Soundtrap. Open them in Soundtrap and work to find a drum set sound that works with the style of music. You will need to add a drum groove to the entire recording. The main elements you need to have are hi-hat (or some type of cymbal), snare drum, and kick drum.
This page includes examples of multiple measure drum grooves. Most of the grooves we have used so far have been one measure and they have repeated, except for potential fills. Listen to these examples and see which one you like the most!
ASSIGNMENT #14 - Using one of the multiple measure drum groove beat maps on this page, enter the beat into Soundtrap and experiment with various sounds.
Using all of the knowledge you have gained from this section. You will now be creating your own drum groove to go along with a prerecorded track!
ASSIGNMENT #15 -
Find a prerecorded track on Soundtrap and enter it into the project
Add a drum/beat track to the prerecorded track. This track must be composed by you and not prerecorded!
This project should be at least eight measures long
