This unit will focus on the basics of playing a guitar. For the purposes of this class, almost everything will be applied to an acoustic guitar, but almost all of the aspects can be applied to an electric guitar also.
Understanding the different parts of the guitar is essential for your success on the instrument. Check out the video and then fill out the PDF assignment
The tips below will be for the standard setup of an acoustic guitar. Some individuals could be playing left handed in which case these items and strings and other elements will be reversed.
The left hand will be used to push down the strings at each fret. The thumb of your left will be on the back part of the neck with your fingers reaching around.
The right hand will be used to strum the strings of the guitar over the sound hole
While seated there is a small indent in the body of the guitar to help you rest it on your leg.
On a typical 6 string guitar you will have 6 strings. These strings are usually tuned to the following notes from lowest (largest) to highest (smallest) string.
6 5 4 3 2 1
E A D G B E
In the document you can see those strings labeled at the top.
There are a ton of great tuning apps out there that can help you tune your guitar. Feel free to find a free one on the app store of your phone. If you are willing to spend some money to get a great app, take a look at the Tonal Energy app. It has a ton of features such as a metronome, tuning, tuning tendencies and a ton of other items. The accuracy is great also.
There are many methods to tune your guitar and the video will quickly go through 2 of those methods.
Practice playing the open strings on your guitar. Set a metronome to whatever speed you want and start playing. You can also search for a free drum beat track on YouTube if you want to practice playing along with the sound of drums instead of a click.
