Why Race Matters

Within this site you will find articles, videos, media and activities to incorporate into your school, departments, and daily life to help expand your conversations about race and asking "Why Race Matters?"

Within Milwaukee Public Schools we are utilizing the evidence-based protocols and structure to discuss race from Glenn Singleton- "Courageous Conversations about Race." Glenn Singleton uses his Courageous Conversations Compass, 4 Agreements, and 6 Conditions to create a brave space for individuals to talk about race and work towards change.

Containing a variety of articles specifically looking at the role of race in education and society in general.  Asking 'why race matters?' After reading the article you are encouraged to reflect on which quadrant of the Courageous Conversations Compass you find yourself and why. If you are able to read articles in a small or large group, have individuals discuss where they find themselves on the Compass and why. Please take time and annonymously leave your thoughts here to grow our district conversations about race. 

Containing a variety of videos, Ted Talks, documentaries, podcasts, and books specifically looking at the role of race in education and society in general.  Asking 'why race matters?' While watching or reading you are encouraged to reflect on which quadrant of the Courageous Conversations Compass you find yourself and why. If you are able to watch or read in a small or large group, have individuals discuss where they find themselves on the Compass and why. Please take time and anonymously leave your thoughts here to grow our district conversations about race. 

Containing school wide activities, classroom activities, newsletters, and grade specific lessons to engage staff members and students in activities and lessons on race. 

All PD available through LMS as self-paced online modules within Google Classroom. Modules vary in length from mini modules of 30-60 minutes up to more comprehensive modules totally 3-5 hours of total content. Descriptions of each session available.

Resources including articles, videos, podcasts, reflections, and activities aligned to the Courageous Conversations about Race protocols including the Four Agreements, Courageous Conversations Compass, 3 Tiers of engagement, and Above/Below the line. 

Containing a variety of articles specifically looking at the COVID-19 pandemic in Milwaukee and across the globe through the lens of race. Articles cover a variety of topics of how COVID-19 has been disproportionality affecting minority communities in terms of coverage, medical care, spread, and other areas. Asking 'why race matters?' If you are interested in leaving a video on your thoughts on COVID-19 and race, either your experience or your reflection from reading an article, you are encourage to leave a 5 minute or less video here: https://flipgrid.com/0277f485
