Salon Neo:
Unlike Eye Lush, which specialized in lashes, Salon Neo offers everything, from hair to nails to waxing— it's a multiservice shop. If you need to get ready for a special occasion and don't want to have to go to 6 different places, come to Salon Neo! It's located on Hancock Street, a bustling road full of Asian restaurants and stores. We were only able to interview her for 5 minutes because her appointment was about to begin. Still, we were able to hear a little bit about her experiences as a small-business owner in Quincy.
Salon Neo is a family business, first started by the owner's mother in 2006. They immigrated from Vietnam in the April of 1983, so they've been living here in the States for quite some time. They originally went to Dorchester— where her aunt was living— so that they had somewhere to live. Once they got on their feet, the two of them moved to Braintree.
When asked about COVID-related difficulties, the owner shared that they had to close for 3 months, making things really difficult. They still had to pay for rent, but there was no incoming revenue. Salons require close contact between the specialists and the customers, so physical touch cannot be avoided, unlike in the case of a bakery or any restaurant. Still, Salon Neo was able to bounce back once restrictions loosened up.
She also said that she doesn't think Asian businesses get enough attention. There are so many amazing stores in Quincy that deserve more customers, but their location and lack of modernity keep customers away. That's why we were even more surprised to hear that Salon Neo actually does get a few Milton Academy students from time to time!
