Fairy Cafe, a quaint little restaurant located in North Quincy, provides a relaxing environment for all customers. Intended for students, this cafe specializes in sweet drinks and savory snacks, but they also offer traditional dishes that a regular Chinese café would typically serve. Drawn by their cutesy interior, we decided to stop by and hear about their story. Fairy Cafe is located in a little block filled with Chinese-owned restaurants. To get there, you can take the red line to the Wollaston station.
Fairy Cafe was created by Mike, who remains the owner of the store today. Mike was inspired primarily by his daughter to start Fairy Cafe. Yet, he had also always hoped to open a small café like the ones he saw in the animés that he watched growing up. Mike wanted to create a space for all kinds of people, including young adults and children, to enjoy some Chinese delicacies while catching up with friends. Each dish has been uniquely designed by Mike, his homemade recipes representing the Chinese food industry while utilizing special spices to conjure unique flavors.
Although we did not have the chance to speak with Mike, we spoke with his most dedicated employee Jody. Jody’s entire family arrived from Fuzhou, China in the late 1900s. They chose to move to Quincy, Massachusetts, where Jody eventually landed a job at Fairy Cafe when they opened in 2013. Jody has been working here ever since.
Fun Fact: Jody’s daughter used to attend Milton Academy’s summer program for a couple of years. She holds a special place in her heart for Milton students as they used to eat at Fairy Cafe often.
After the pandemic forced many restaurants to close, Fairy Cafe shut its doors for two months, putting Jody in a difficult position financially. After this hiatus, Fairy Cafe reopened, but with takeout as the only option. Nonetheless, Fairy Cafe stayed afloat with its dedicated workers and steady flow of customers.
