Behind the Scenes: The Cafeteria Reward System
Millis, Massachusetts — At MMS, promoting positive behavior is a priority, and this year, the school has introduced an exciting new reward system to encourage students in grades 6-8 to show respect, responsibility, and good manners in the cafeteria.
The cafeteria behavior reward program began at the end of the first trimester, giving students a fresh start to show off their best behaviors during lunch. Students who demonstrate positive actions—such as using polite table manners, cleaning up after themselves, and being respectful to lunch staff and peers—earn a sticker. The goal is to reinforce good habits and create a positive environment where students can enjoy their meals while learning the importance of responsibility and respect.
So far, students have responded enthusiastically, and the cafeteria has become a more pleasant space for everyone. As the sixth graders, who are new to the middle school experience, enter the cafeteria for the first time this year, many have quickly adapted to the expectations, earning their first stickers by showing kindness and respect toward others.
With each sticker earned, students get one step closer to earning privileges and rewards, such as first to get lunch and snack. As the school year progresses, the reward system continues to help students stay focused on demonstrating their best behavior, and it’s become an important part of making the lunchroom a welcoming space for all.
By recognizing students for their positive actions, the program encourages a sense of pride and responsibility that extends beyond the cafeteria. It's all about creating a school culture where students take ownership of their actions, support one another, and celebrate the small successes that contribute to a better school environment
