Students in Family and Consumer Science will evaluate factors that influence human growth and development as it relates to education training and learning support services. This area also looks at the home experience in culinary and design to create strategies that promote individual and family health and well-being as they explore related career opportunities in hospitality and tourism as well.

MANAGING THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (Foran Only)

Students will have the opportunity to work under supervision with children ages 3-4 in the Child Learning Center and report to the Foran Child Learning Center teachers in the learning center. Each student will be responsible for planning, directing and guiding activities and routines in all forms of play including art, music, science and language development. INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Emphasis will be on modern development trends, along with an understanding of the organization and composition of early childhood education settings, which include curriculum materials, learning environment, and equipment. BAKE SHOP

Bake Shop is designed as an introduction to baking. Laboratory work will provide the opportunity to become familiar with kitchen tools, equipment, baking terminology, and the science behind baking. Baked items such as quick breads, dairy and breakfast bakes, yeast, pies, pastries, cookies, cakes, and plating will be covered. Students will be able to explore various types of baked goods and will try a variety of recipes. Instruction in safety, sanitation and personal hygiene as it relates to baking production will be included. Management and leadership roles will also be experienced. Emphasis is on the production of quality baked goods and the economic principles in the baking industry. Prerequisite: Introduction to Culinary Arts and Nutrition (formerly Culinary Arts I) and Advanced Culinary Arts (formerly Culinary Arts and Nutrition II).
INTERIOR DESIGN

Do you enjoy redecorating your room? Are you interested in careers in interior design? Well, this is your class! In this course, students will explore the basics of interior design and learn about floor plans, various furniture styles, flooring options and window treatments. Using a variety of media, students create virtual design plans. Students will be introduced to and explore the elements and Principles of Design such as color, balance, harmony, emphasis, proportion and scale. An assortment of experiences will help enrich and develop opportunities to express their ideas and vision, shaping their own aesthetic. Communication skills and collaboration will be utilized to understand and meet the needs of clients.

While students are welcome to enroll in individual Family and Consumer Science classes based on interest, students may choose to concentrate on a specific career cluster. (Education and Training Cluster or Hospitality and Tourism Cluster) Career clusters outline a sequence of learning and exploration that is connected to real world career possibilities, and the education and training needed to succeed in those careers. In Family and Consumer Science the career clusters are suggestions – please, remember that all prerequisites listed in the course descriptions, including minimum grade requirements and teacher recommendations must be met.
