Student Development & Wellness

Our mission is to promote and enhance the physical and emotional health and well-being of every member of our educational community, so that each individual can achieve his or her highest goals and aspirations and live a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Students are required to successfully complete a PE and Wellness course each year, grades 9-12. Each course is a quarter long and will be coupled with a Health and Safety Course.

NOTE: Class of 2022-Requirements fall under former graduation requirements: 1.0 PE and Wellness (PE) and .5 Health. Students in the graduation class of 2022 who still need to complete their health credit requirement should enroll in Health and Safety III and Health and Safety IV. For PE requirement pick an Elective (s).

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & WELLNESS

Students in Physical Education will engage in regular, rigorous and enjoyable physical activities

to improve their overall health.


The Physical Education Department strives to promote total wellness — physical, mental, emotional and social — through a planned, sequential program of selected activities. The goals of the Physical Education program are to develop knowledge and appreciation of the lifetime benefits of maintaining individual fitness, health-related physical fitness, and skill-related physical fitness. Students will have choices within each Physical Education & Wellness course that will better align to his or her longtime fitness goals. Students are required to obtain a total of 1.0 credit in PE and Wellness in order to graduate.


Please note: Students who are excused from Physical Education classes by a physician have the opportunity to make up the classes when released by a physician. Students who cannot make up the classes by the end of the semester must retake the course.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & WELLNESS I

Grade 9 (0.25 Credits)

This integrated program is designed to help each student achieve and maintain a healthy level of overall fitness for life. Starting with a baseline measurement of their own levels of fitness, students will then focus on a variety of physical and health related activities. Activities range from individual and partner sports to team sports and games. A fitness component is included, throughout the course, with a focus on developing the overall fitness levels of each student.

Grade 10 (0.25 Credits)

Level: 2 –502215

This course encompasses classroom and physical activity experiences with the emphasis on self-direction and resourcefulness as students explore topics related to behavior change and goal setting, as well as understanding the roles of team members and the responsibilities needed to get a team to perform at its best in pursuit of reaching a common goal. This course explores and applies Tuckman's model of collaborative teaming in a classroom and physical activity setting. Non-traditional games and activities will be the emphasis of this course.

JUNIOR AND SENIOR ELECTIVES (Grades 11/12 only)

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & WELLNESS II

This course is a continuation of Physical Education & Wellness 1. Students will continue to increase fitness levels in a variety of physical and health related activities. Students will take what was learned about teamwork and leadership in the T.E.A.M.S course sophomore year and apply it to more competitive individual, partner and team activities. A fitness component is included, throughout the course, with a focus on continuing development of the overall fitness level of each student. Prerequisite: T.E.A.M.S (The prerequisite does not apply for School Year 2021-2022)

PEER ASSISTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grade 11,12 (0.25 Credits)

Level:E-50E310

In this program co-teachers and peer teachers will work alongside students needing assistive physical education. This course will provide valuable teaching experiences to students interested in pursuing a career in teaching, physical/occupational therapy, and any other related heath field. Prerequisite: T.E.A.M.S (The prerequisite does not apply for School Year 2021-2022)

COMPETITIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grade 11,12 (0.25 Credits)

Level: E – 50E205

This elective class is offered for those students who desire an additional physical education course with an emphasis on competition and challenge. Students will participate in team, small group and individual sports in a competitive atmosphere. Students who have fulfilled all their other elective requirements may take this class a second time. Prerequisite: T.E.A.M.S (The prerequisite does not apply for School Year 2021-2022)


COACHING

Grade 11, 12 (0.25 Credits)

Level: E – 50E320

This elective class is offered for those students who are interested in coaching individual and team sports. This course will prepare students for organizing, running and developing practices for various sports as well as how to work with athletes in one on one training to develop specific skills. This class will be taught through classroom lessons as well as developing and instituting practice plans in the gymnasium or athletic fields. Prerequisite: T.E.A.M.S (The prerequisite does not apply for School Year 2021-2022)

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING for ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

Need to learn how to strength train to become stronger and quicker in your sport? Here you will learn how to properly increase muscle mass and build cardiovascular endurance to become the best athlete you can, enhancing all of the hard work put in. This class is geared towards highly active athletes who are interested in developing their performance on the field or in the gym. Prerequisite: T.E.A.M.S (The prerequisite does not apply for School Year 2021-2022)

OPTIMAL NUTRITION for ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

Grade 11, 12

Level: E - 50E115

Are you looking to learn about what foods are going to benefit your athletic performance so you’re not feeling sluggish through practices or on game days? Here you will learn how nutrition is essential to becoming the best athlete you can, enhancing all of the hard work put in. Students will learn how to properly manage their macronutrient ratios in order to increase muscle mass and increase athletic performance .This class is geared towards highly active athletes who are interested in developing their performance on the field or in the gym. Prerequisite: T.E.A.M.S (The prerequisite does not apply for School Year 2021-2022)

SHAPE UP

Grade 11,12 (0.25 Credits)

Level: E – 50E305

This elective class encompasses a fitness experience that emphasizes the student’s ability to understand the various components of fitness with an emphasis on collecting and analyzing personal metrics to plan out individual flexibility, cardiorespiratory and strength programs. It is designed for students who are interested in physical activity through fitness and weight training. Students will have an opportunity to work alongside instructed yoga, interval and circuit training routines. Prerequisite: T.E.A.M.S (The prerequisite does not apply for School Year 2021-2022)
