COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Human Growth and Development (formerly Child Development I)

Grade 9,10,11,12 (0.5 Credits)

This course introduces students to the physical, intellectual, emotional and social growth of children from birth through the adolescent years, including parenting skills and their effect on a child’s development. All students will observe children in the Child Learning Center. Child Development is especially valuable for students interested in careers in teaching, medicine, speech pathology, sociology, psychology, early childhood education and child care.

EARLY CHILDHOOD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT (formerly Child Development II)

Grade 9,10,11,12 (0.5 Credits)

Students study the developing child from ages 1-6. Students study the importance of play, the stages of development, and the significance of the multiple influences of home, community, and child care on the behaviors of a child in the early years. Prerequisite: Human Growth and Development (formerly Child Development I).

MANAGING THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT (formerly Lab Assistant) Foran Only

Grade 10,11,12 (0.5 Credits)

Students will have the opportunity to work under supervision with children ages 3-5 in the Child Learning Center and report to the Foran Child Learning Center teachers in the learning center. Each student will be responsible for planning and directing activities in all forms of play including art, music, science and language development. Please note this course may be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: Human Growth and Development (formerly Child Development I) and Child Growth and Development (formerly Child Development II)



INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

This course is articulated with Housatonic Community College and is a college-level course (ECE 101). A study of historical, philosophical, and social perspectives of early care and education. Emphasis will be on modern development trends, along with an understanding of the organization and composition of early childhood education settings, which include curriculum materials, learning environment, and equipment. This course includes required field trips to child care settings. Prerequisite: Human Growth and Development (formerly Child Development I) and Child Growth and Development (formerly Child Development II)

METHODS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING (formerly Child Care Lab) Foran Only

Working under the supervision of the Center teacher, students will plan, schedule and follow through on daily routines in the Child Learning Center in a managerial capacity. Please note this course meets with Ms. Pangu in the classroom where foundations in lesson planning, guidance, and learning styles are established before students implement lessons/activities in the Foran Child Learning Center. Prerequisite: Human Growth and Development (formerly Child Development I ) and Child Growth and Development (formerly Child Development II)
