Canadian School Events
Do you know some school events in Canada? They are very different than school events in Japan. I was very surpised to learn that every year in Japan there is an entrance ceremony for new students. In Canada, there is no entrance ceremony. Here are some events we have in Canada, that you don't have in Japan.
Pajama day
Students and teachers wear their pajamas to school!
Scholastic book fair
Every year, in elementary school, a book fair comes to the school for around 1 week. Students get to shop for books and fun school supplies durning lunch break and after school!
School dances
A couple times a year students get to go to a school dance. The dance happens in the evening, students dress up and return to school at night for the party. There is fun music, snacks, and dancing with your friends.

How is your summer vacation so far? The weather has been so hot everyday, I find it difficult to be outside!
One of my favorite activities to do in summer is hiking. Even though it has been very hot, I have gone on a couple very fun hikes! My two favorite hikes were Oze National Park and Shiratani Unsuikyo on Yakushima!
Have you ever been to Oze? It is near the boarder of Gunma, Niigata, and Fukushima. It is a protected national park, with many wild animals and beautiful scenery. I hiked for 3.5 hours to reach my campsite and stayed over night. The nature was beautiful! I saw many animals such as a baby bear and fireflies! When the sun rose, the marsh was covered in peaceful fog.
Shiratani Unsuikyo is on Yakushima in Kyushu. It is the forest that inspired the Studio Ghibli movie 「もののけ姫」! To get to Yakushima, I had to take a 1.5 hour boat. The hike was not too difficult, and the view was amazing! I also saw a family of monkeys on the hike!
Do you like hiking? I recommend these hikes if you can go!

Tuesday 1, July
July 1st is Canada Day! It is a day to celebrate Canada's birthday. Canada is a very young country compared to countries like Japan. Canada became a country in 1867, which means it is 158 years old this year. Since July is often hot and sunny, we have outdoor parties and parades to celebrate! People cook BBQ, hang out with friends, and watch fireworks. And of course, everyone wears red and white colors.
Even though Canada as a country has only existed for 158 years, that doesn't mean that people didn't live there before. The indigenous people of Canada have lived there for thousands of years. It is important that when we celebrate Canada Day, we also acknowledge the people who lived there before us.

Summer is here, and it is so hot!
How do you like to spend your free time in the summer? When I'm free, I like to go swimming outside. Do you know that Canada is famous for having the most lakes of any country? Canada has around 879, 800 lakes! So its not surprising that Canadians love to hang out at the lake when the weather is hot. Many people think that Canada is cold all the time, but this is NOT true. Canada can get VERY hot in the summer, especially the in the middle of Canada. It often reaches 30-40 degrees.
It is more difficult to find lakes to swim in Japan, but last weekend I went to Shimonita with my friends to swim in the river! The weather was so hot so many families were at the river to swim too. We had so much fun jumping in the water a swimming around. After, we ate yakiniku and fruit on the beach.
If you have time, you should go!

Hello! I recently returned to Canada for a week to visit my family and friends!
I love living in Japan, but there are many things I miss in Canada. Of course, I miss my family, friends, and pets. But, I also really missed western style food! When I was in Canada I ate so much delicious food and snacks! My mom made turkey dinner for me, and my dad made homemade hamburgers. I also filled my suitcase with potato chips and other snacks to bring back to Japan, because I like American style potato chips more than Japanese ones. Did you know that all Japanese chips have a sweet taste to foreigners? My Japanese friends don't think they are sweet, but every foreigner I ask thinks that they are. Have you tried chips made in America or Canada? Try comparing them to Japanese chips and see if you can tell the difference!

Are you interested in cryptids/monsters (幻獣) ? I think cryptids are very interesting because they usually have cultural importance.
In North America (Canada and America), there is a famous cryptid named Bigfoot. Bigfoot are named after the very big foot prints that people have found (see photo). Bigfoot are a kind of half ape (猿) half human (人). They live in the deep forest. People say that they smell so bad that you know a Bigfoot is near by the bad smell. The aboriginal (先住民族) people believe that Bigfoot is not dangerous, and are from the spirit world.
What do you think? Are Bigfoot real? I think that it is fun to imagine they are. I recommend watching a Bigfoot "Documentary" to learn more.

Hello! This week the weather was so nice. Last weekend, I went camping in Tateyama in Chiba with my friends! Our campground was near the beach, therefore the view was so beautiful!
I love the ocean, but there is no ocean in Gunma. It was so nice to spend the day on the beach. I walked in the water and collected sea shells. It was so fun!
Do you know Tateyama is famous for peanuts? In Tateyama I tried peanut soft cream for the first time. It was delicious. Have you tried peanut soft cream? I recommend it!

一年生, welcome to Daichu! And welcome back 二年生 and 三年生! Did you have a fun spring break? What did you do?
My friend from Canada came to Japan to visit me! It was her first time visiting Japan. We went to Saitama to see cherry blossoms. Last week, Omiya park had a cherry blossom festival. We enjoyed walking around, eating snacks, and taking pictures! There are cherry trees in Canada too, but I have never seen so many beautiful cherry trees in one place before!
Japanese sakura are my favorite flowers. I love the color pink the most!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
March 17th is Saint Patrick's Day. Do you know about it? It is a day to celebrate Irish culture and heritage. This holiday is very popular in Canada, America, and the UK. Because there are many Irish people who live in these places.
We celebrate Saint Patrick's Day by making everything green! The green color represents the Irish symbol of a clover. There are many fun activities to do on the holiday. There are parades, parties, and green drinks and food. For example, McDonalds sells a green milkshake, and many bars sell green beer. The most important part of Saint Patrick's Day is to wear green clothes. If you don't wear green you will get pinched!
My family heritage is Irish, so every year I have fun celebrating Saint Patrick's day. My family name is McHugh, and we display our Irish family crest on Saint Patrick's Day.

Wow! It's March already! Lately the weather has been getting much warmer. Are you looking forward to spring?
On the weekend, I went to Naganohara to go snowboarding with friends! We stayed two nights in a cabin and had fun playing Mario Party and eating hot dogs.
During the day, we went to the ski resort. My friends have never tried snowboarding before, so I got to teach them how. We had so much fun! I also tried skiing, even though I am not very good at it. Have you tried skiing or snowboarding before?
I started snowboarding when I was 7 years old. In Canada, my family would go every year. It's one of my favorite things to do!
On the way home, we met a new friend! A curious fox! The fox came right up to our car to say hello.

How was your weekend?
My friend from Hong Kong came to visit. My friend's favorite movie is Disney's Rapunzel, therefore they wanted to go to Disney Sea. I have been to Disney Land in California USA, but it was my first time at Tokyo Disney. It was very crowded but the weather was nice! I ate a lot of yummy food. We went on the Rapunzel ride, as well as many other rides. My favorite was Tower of Terror and Indiana Jones Temple of Doom. I like the scary rides the most! Have you been to Disney Land? What is your favorite ride?

Do you know about Groundhog Day? Every year on February 2nd, Americans and Canadians wait for a very special groundhog to awake from his winter sleep and predict when spring will come. Sounds silly right? It is, but we love it.
The tradition began in 1886, in Pennsylvania, USA, and has continued every year. How does it work? A 'magical' groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil, said to be 125 years old, is the official groundhog of Pennsylvania. He is gently awoken from his winter hibernation. If Phil sees his shadow , there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, spring will come early!
What is a groundhog? It is a type of large ground squirrel.
2025 Groundhog Day!
Phil saw his shadow! There will be 6 more weeks of winter!

Last weekend, I traveled to Tokyo to go to a museum! Since the train ride was long, I started reading a new book. It is called Jurassic Park! It is also a famous movie, do you know it? It is one of my favorite movies because I love dinosaurs. I recommend it.
In the afternoon, I met some friends at Ueno Station. Next, we visited the Tokyo Museum of Nature and Science. We walked around the museum together for hours. There were many interesting things there! We saw a lot of different animals and technology. My favorite part was the dinosaur exhibition.
We were hungry after walking around the museum, so we went to a Korean restaurant and ate pork belly. It was delicious.

Happy New Year! 良いお年を!
I hope everyone had a fun winter break with their family and friends. What did you do? In Canada we celebrate New Years very differently than in Japan. We celebrate on Dec 31st. We stay up till 12am, watch fireworks, and make a resolution for the new year. This year, I celebrated a mix of Canadian and Japanese New Years traditions. My Canadian friends, who also live in Japan, came to visit me. We had a party and played games. I also tried some Japanese traditions.
My friends and I got up early to see the first sunrise. It was beautiful!
We drove to 赤城山 and visited the shrine to get 御守. It was so cold!
I ate soba on New Years, but I also tried Gunma's 焼きまんじゅう for the first time. It was yummy!

Tuesday 18, December
It's December 18th, which means Christmas is in exactly one week! Do you have any plans for winter vacation? At Christmas time, people have many different traditions that they do every year.
In Canada, my family and I have many Christmas traditions that we enjoy doing together. Because I am in Japan this year, it is difficult to do most of those traditions such as baking cookies, eating turkey, and putting up the Christmas tree.
Despite not being able to do most of my Christmas traditions, I was able to do one of my favorite traditions last night! Every year I love to go to the Nutcracker ballet. Takasaki City Theater hosted the Ukrainian State Ballet who preformed the Nutcracker. I went with my friend and it made me so happy to continue that tradition. Watching the show and listening to the music reminded me of home.
Have you ever seen the Nutcracker ballet? It is a very old story by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who is my favorite classical music composer. If you haven't, I recommend it because the music is very beautiful.

Wednesday 4, December
Wow! It is already December! That means Christmas celebrations are happening all around the world. Christmas is a relatively new holiday in Japan, but there is one Christmas tradition in Japan that is well known overseas. In Japan, many people eat fried chicken every year on Christmas. Many people do not know why this tradition started, and many do not know that in North America we never eat fried chicken for Christmas. Instead, we eat roasted turkey and mashed potatoes. So how did fried chicken become a Christmas tradition in Japan?
Once apon a time... (1970), the first Kentucky Fried Chicken opened in Japan. By 1981, there was 324 stores across Japan! During this time, not many people celebrated Christmas in Japan yet. One day, a foreigner came into a KFC restaurant in Tokyo and said, "I can't get turkey in Japan, so I will have to celebrate Christmas with Kentucky Fried Chicken". This gave KFC an idea. They decided to market KFC chicken as a traditional American Christmas meal, even if that wasn't true. The marketing worked really well and many Japanese people made KFC a Christmas tradition.
In order to celebrate Christmas Japanese style, I ordered KFC for Christmas! Do you also eat KFC for Christmas?

Last week, went to Kyoto for the first time! Kyoto has been a place that I have wanted to visit for many years. The beauty and culture of Kyoto is known worldwide. Every year the prefecture of Kyoto is visited by millions of tourists from all over Japan and the world.
Why do so many people visit Kyoto? For one thing, Kyoto has 17 World Heritage sites! The sacred shrines, temples, and castles have influenced a lot art. One of my favorite artists, 川瀬 巴水 , was inspired by Kyoto's beauty for many of his prints.
This art was done by 川瀬 巴水, and a shrine in Kyoto can be seen in it. I think his art is so beautiful.

This week and next week my younger sister is visiting me in Japan!
This is my sister's first time in Japan. There are many things she wants to do during her time here! In Canada, Japanese Kawaii culture is very famous. We want to look for Kawaii things while in Japan!
My sister is a person that loves cats a lot! Look at the first picture. This is a picture of coffee that we got at a cat café. The one with a picture of Suchan on it is my coffee, and the one with a picture of Mochikina on it is my sister's coffee. So cute!
We also went to a photo booth to take Kawaii style photos in Tokyo. This is a photo that we took in Shibuya. The girl who has pink hair is my sister!

Happy Halloween!
In Japan, Cosplay is a well known activity where people of any age can dress up as whoever or whatever they want and go to conventions. In North America, for most people, Halloween is the only time they can dress up in costumes! I always dress up every year and go out with my friends! This weekend, I am going to Minakami with some friends to stay in a lodge. We are going to have a Halloween party! This Halloween I am going to be Hannah Montana. Do you know this Character? She is from a TV show in the 2000s.
I hope you had a fun Halloween!

Do you know about Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is the name of a holiday that we celebrate in Canada and America. Canadian Thanksgiving was yesterday, and my family sent me photos of them celebrating together.
Thanksgiving is a day to be thankful, and spend time with family and people we love. It is tradition to have a big dinner and before we eat everyone must say one thing they are thankful for.
Thanksgiving dinner is very special. It takes hours and hours to prepare. We eat baked turkey, bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, with gravy and cranberry sauce. For dessert we eat pie and drink wine, and spend time together at the table.
I wish I could eat Thanksgiving dinner now!

Hello! Do you know who these people are? They are my Family!
Recently, the 2-1 and 2-2 English classes did an interesting English activity! We did a "Call to Canada" activity! The students talked to my mom, my dad, and my younger sister. The students also met my family pets in Canada. My family has 2 dogs, and 1 cat .
The 2nd graders are practicing "Must" and "Mustn't", therefore, they taught my family about things you must and mustn't do in Japan. We also learned that Canada is 16hrs behind Japan! That means it was 8pm on Tuesday in Canada, at the same time it was 12pm Wednesday in Japan!
My family was very happy to talk to the students! They told me after that they thought the student's English was very good!
Thank you for greeting my family kindly! Let's talk again!

How was your 3 day weekend? Did you do anything fun?
On Saturday, I took the train to Shibuya to meet a friend who lives in Yokohama! I met this friend in university in Canada, so it was great to see her in Japan!
I also wanted to explore around Midori during my time off. There are so many beautiful nature walks near by. I rode my bike to the Takatsudo Gorge for an afternoon walk yesterday. It was so peaceful.
Which do you like more, the city or the inaka?

Hello everyone!
My name is Charlotte, and I am the new ALT from Canada! Thank you for welcoming me to Daichu. I am very excited to be here!
A month ago, I came to Japan for the first time and have experienced so many new things. During summer vacation, I went to the Takasaki Festival. Did you go to the Takasaki Festival as well? I wore a yukata for the first time and ate yakisoba. It was so much fun! Although it rained a lot during the festival, the rain stopped before the fireworks began. The fireworks were beautiful.
I hope everyone had a fun summer vacation!

“What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

I have been getting ready to move home. My five years in Japan is almost finished. So this week, first and second year students played the Final Game.
Third year students will play it next week, so I can't tell you much about it yet. But it was very difficult. I think it was too difficult, because no one could finish it... Oops. But I hope everyone had fun.

When I came to school today, there was a yellow book on my desk.
It was about Médecins Sans Frontières. In English, we call them "Doctors Without Borders." They are a group of doctors who give medical help to people in countries in crisis.
The third SDG is to "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages." That means everyone can take care of their health. But this is not yet reality. There are still many people who cannot get medical help due to war, poverty, or disasters.
I think it is very easy to see a doctor in Japan. Japan is not at war now, but there are still problems here, too. For example, some of Ishikawa is still closed due to the earthquake on January 1st. And over 15% of children in Japan live in poverty. I wonder if these people can see doctors easily?
It is also difficult for women in Japan to get medical help. Less than 24% of all doctors in Japan are women. Also, women are 30% more likely to not get help because the doctor ignores their problems. And if they do get help, they have to wait longer than men do.
The situation in many countries is worse than Japan. But even if you think "these countries that need medical help are far away" and you can't do anything, please think about what you can do for the problems close to you.

Did you have a good weekend? I did!
I went to Tokyo with my friends because there was a special event.
It was a One Piece buffet!
There were many different dishes. There were sweet desserts and other food like pizza, pasta, pilaf, and curry fries, too. I ate a lot of desserts because I like sweets. Because there were many kinds of sweets, I tried a lot of different dishes!
We wanted to try everything, but we couldn't. There was too much food! I wish I was like Luffy, because he can eat a lot. If I eat too much, I feel sick... Well, I guess that's normal, isn't it?

Last Friday, I rode the Jomo train from Maebashi.
When I got on, I was surprised to see many stuffed toys. There were tigers and rabbits, and even a Moomin! They made the train feel lively and fun.
I thought it was very cute.
When I was a child, I had many stuffed toys, too. There are even two stuffed toys in the English room now. There is a wombat and a koala. They are my toys from when I was a child! I brought them to Japan to show students Australian animals.
There is also a platypus. I think the platypus is the most popular of the three. But actually, he is from Japan! I won him at the arcade! Nisemonohashi!

Last week, we learned how to play cricket in English.
Do you know cricket?
It's very popular in Australia and many other countries.
A lot of students think it's like baseball, but I think it's very different!
For one thing, cricket is played on a round field. For another, the batter can run many times and get many points. A cricket team has just 11 players. And a cricket bat has a square shape, and one side is flat!
If you are interested, I will tell you more about cricket.

Tomorrow is World Day for Cultural Diversity. It was made by UNESCO to celebrate all the different cultures, and reminds us that communication between cultures is necessary for peace.
The number of different cultures in Gunma is increasing every year. In 2023, there were over 72,000 people from other countries living in Gunma. That's 10% higher than 2022! There were people from 6 new countries, too. The top five countries that people came from were Vietnam, Brazil, the Philippines, China, and Peru. What do you know about the culture in these countries?
Did you think about food, or weather? Those might be the first things we think about when we say *culture.* But we need to think harder! For example, how do different cultures communicate? What is normal in Japan, but rude in other countries? In Japan, you often say "un, un" or other 相槌 to show that you are listening. But in some other cultures, this might be rude! Or, in Australia, we say "hi, how are you?" as a greeting, not a question. You must say "not bad, you?" or "good thanks, yourself?" If you answer with your real feelings, people might get confused or uncomfortable!
If we learn about how other cultures communicate, we can understand each other better, even if we don't speak the same language.

It has been a long time since I went there. But there was a cool red sign at the top of the mountain, and my friends wanted to take a picture of it with their car. Do you know this car?
If you have watched the anime or read the manga called Initial D, I think you will recognise this car!

Tomorrow is Rice Ball Day!
... What?
Yeah! I was surprised to hear that, too! But I guess rice balls are very delicious, and very popular, especially in Japan. We can buy onigiri everywhere, and there are many different kinds.
But Rice Ball day isn't just about onigiri. It's also for rice balls from other countries. Look at these examples below. Are there any you want to try eating?
-Caitlin
(2nd grader level)
Zongzi uses a different rice to Japanese onigiri, and are wrapped in leaves and steamed or boiled. They can use sweet ingredients, or have meat in them. Zongzi are similar to Japanese chimaki. And they are also found in other countries. They are called bakcang in Malaysia, phet htoke in Myanmar, nom chang in Cambodia, machang in Philippines, bacang in Indonesia, khanom chang in Laos, and ba-chang in Thailand.
Pinda are made with cooked rice, black sesame seeds and ghee.
They are cooked for special Hindu funerals and ceremonies, to help souls to find their ancestors.
Some people believe that crows can see the souls and are the messengers of the afterlife, so they feed the pinda to the crows.
I think this is a very interesting ritual!
Omo tuo are made from soft, sticky rice and usually served with soup made from peanuts. In Niger and Nigeria, omo tuo is called tuwon shinkafa, and the soup is different,
After it is cooked, the rice is mashed and then pounded into a ball shape. To eat it, people usually tear pieces off with their hands, and dip it in the soup.
Omo tuo is so popular that it is often eaten as a special at restaurants on Sundays!
Arancini are stuffed with meat or cheese, and then breaded and deep-fried. The name comes from the Sicilian word for "orange," because of the shape and color after they are cooked.
Even though these rice balls are from Italy, they are very popular in Australia and other countries, too!
I wonder if you can buy them in Japan?

On the weekend, I went to a shrine near the school for a tea ceremony. It was my first time going to a tea ceremony. There were more people than I thought, so we had to wait a few minutes.
There was a woman playing the koto at the shrine, so we listened to music while we waited. It was very nice.
I ate some traditional Japanese sweets and drank matcha, green tea. It was delicious and relaxing. I also saw two students! One is still at Daichu, and one has already graduated. It was nice to see them both!
After that, I went to hanami, flower viewing. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom now, so all the trees are very beautiful.
We don't have cherry blossom trees in Australia, so I'm always happy to see them while I'm in Japan. But I don't really like cherry blossom flavored food... do you?

Do you know about autism?
April is Autism Awareness month. And this week is Autism Awareness week! And Tuesday was Autism Awareness Day!
Well, now you are probably very aware.
Autism is「自閉症」in Japanese. But I don't like this word. It seems very cruel. Those kanji mean "self withdrawl." It seems like it means "this person isn't living in the world," doesn't it?
Japan has the third highest rate of Autistic people in the world. That's one in 55 children! But only 26% of Autistic people feel happy at school. Only 29% of Autistic people have a job. And 70% of Autistic people experience mental health problems. I think this is a big social problem.
Autism is different for everyone. Some people have trouble with loud noises. Some people aren't good with emotions. Some people have trouble eating new foods, or changing their plans. Some people more help than others. Everyone is different, and everyone experiences the world in a different way. But all of us are still living in the same world.
Instead of asking people with disabilities like Autism to change, or thinking that they are annoying or めいわく、we should think about how we can change the world to make it easier for everyone to live happily.
What do you think? Is there anything we could change to make the world a better place for everyone?

Wow, hello! We moved the school's webpage here, and everything feels so new and fresh! It's just in time for the new school year. Actually, I guess that means this is my first and last post for this year!
A lot of interesting things happened this year. For example, I visited Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Tochigi, Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate, Akita, Aomori, Nagano, Niigata, Kyoto, Osaka, and Shizuoka. I also went to Taiwan!
I went to many summer festivals, and tried many new things like making wagashi and ikebana.
I started to study at university again so that I can make more interesting classes and get better at teaching.
And, of course, I enjoyed English classes with everyone!
When I think about it, I had a very busy year. I am very thankful to have so many wonderful memories in Japan.
I hope that we can have fun in the new school year, too!
