Midlothian’s Modern Apprentice Programme
Our Modern Apprentice programme first started as a pilot with 4 Modern Apprentices in November 2017. In August 2018 we took on our first full cohort of 20 Modern Apprentices and since then a further 5 cohorts of between 20 and 30 enthusiastic practitioners of all ages and from all walks of life have joined this programme.
Modern Apprentices are employed by Midlothian Council and spend 4 days a week learning on the job in an Early Learning and Childcare setting where they are supported by a Mentor in setting and their Placement Supervisor who is a member of the Workforce Development Team. On the remaining day they attend training, initially with the Workforce Development Team. After the six month induction programme learning all about the role and how to support the development of our youngest learners, they start their SVQ3 qualification in Social Services (Children and Young People)
To date, over 70 Early Years Practitioners have achieved their qualification and are contributing to Midlothian’s Early Learning and Childcare workforce.
