University of Northern Philippines - Laboratory School

University of Northern Philippines (UNP) - Laboratory School is a laboratory school established as part of the university’s commitment to strengthening teacher education and improving the quality of basic education. The school is located in Tamag, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, and operates under the supervision of the University of Northern Philippines.

The school was established to serve as a training and practice venue for pre-service teachers, providing opportunities to apply educational theories, teaching strategies, and classroom management skills in an authentic classroom environment. Since its establishment, the Laboratory School has functioned as a partner institution for teaching internships, classroom observations, and educational research.

The Laboratory School offers complete basic and secondary education, serving learners from Kindergarten to Senior High School. The grade levels include:

• Kindergarten: Provides a foundational early childhood education for young learners

• Elementary School: Continues basic education, including observation of Kindergarten 1 and 2 classes

• Secondary School: Part of the basic (Grades 7–10) and senior high school (Grades 11–12) education system, which is integrated into one continuum

At UNP Laboratory School, the junior high school program is divided into the following classes:

• Grade 7

• Grade 8

• Grade 9

Through these educational levels, the school aims to promote academic excellence, character formation, and the holistic development of learners.

Instruction in the Laboratory School emphasizes learner-centered and innovative teaching approaches that support meaningful learning experiences. The school also plays a vital role in the professional development of pre-service teachers by fostering reflective teaching practices, effective classroom management, and professional responsibility.

As a laboratory school, the Laboratory School of the University of Northern Philippines serves as an important bridge between theory and practice in teacher education, contributing to the preparation of competent, ethical, and globally minded future educators.

The academic support system at the University of Northern Philippines Laboratory School supports effective teaching and learning through the availability of essential classroom facilities and technological resources. These facilities help create an interactive and engaging learning environment for students. 

At the UNP Laboratory School, academic support is evident in the availability of comfortable classrooms, learning media such as projectors and whiteboards, and access to relevant teaching materials. In addition, the presence of cooperating teachers and school staff is also an important part of the Academic Support System, as they provide guidance, direction, and evaluation to student teachers during the teaching practice process.

Teachers prepare instructional materials in advance to ensure that lessons are well-organized and aligned with learning objectives. These academic supports contribute to a more effective learning process and help students better understand the lesson content. 

As a student who had the opportunity to conduct teaching practice at the University of Northern Philippines Laboratory School, I saw that the teaching system at the school was very well designed and structured. The allocation of one hour for each subject provided sufficient opportunity for teachers to explain the material, conduct practical activities, and build active interaction with students in the classroom.

In addition, the implementation of teaching and learning activities from Monday to Thursday demonstrates effective academic time management. Meanwhile, extracurricular activities carried out on Fridays provide a good opportunity for students to develop their interests, talents, and social skills outside of academic learning.

In my opinion, this teaching system shows that the school not only focuses on academic achievement but also pays attention to the overall development of students. With a balance between classroom learning and extracurricular activities, the learning environment becomes more interesting, enjoyable, and supportive of students' holistic development.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) Laboratory School implements the MATATAG Curriculum for Kindergarten through Grade 8. Meanwhile, Grades 9 to 12 follow the K–12 Curriculum. 

The MATATAG Curriculum is the Philippines’ newly launched curriculum framework introduced by the Department of Education (DepEd) to replace the previous curriculum. It aims to provide a stronger and more relevant education by emphasizing the development of 21st-century skills, literacy, numeracy, and national character. The acronym MATATAG stands for Makabansa (Patriotic), Matao (People-centered), Mahas (Competent), and Matatag (Resilient).  

Meanwhile, the K–12 Curriculum is an educational system spanning from Kindergarten to Grade12 (approximately 13 years of schooling), commonly implemented in countries such as the United States and Canada. It is designed to gradually build students’ foundational knowledge and skills, preparing them for higher education or the workforce, with a strong focus on comprehensive understanding, critical thinking, innovation, and 21st-century competencies.
