Why Mindfulness?

Program Goals

Many adolescents have not been taught how to properly deal with stress, leading to them falling victim to unhealthy coping methods or depression.

The goals of this initiative are:

  1. To educate students about mental health

  2. Increase the mental well-being of students and staff by integrating mindfulness practices into classrooms

  3. Equip students with the tools they need to thrive in their mental health throughout their lives

Why in School?

Many students feel unable to focus on their mental health because they don't have time or don't know how.

The Mindful Mornings Program is beneficial in the following ways

  • Integrates mindfulness practice into the school day, so students do not feel as though they are wasting working time

  • Is a school-wide program, reducing the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health and making it accessible to all students and staff, who may not have otherwise had access

  • Prevention and mental health education is provided simultaneously

  • Can be brought to groups of students and teachers at once (simple and low/no cost)

For many students, school is their second or first home. Ensuring that our mental health and safety are addressed in school is a priority.

Mental Health & COVID-19's Impact

Mental Health

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents (ages 13-18) and rates are increasing every year

  • Half of all mental health conditions start by 14 years of age

  • Among students in grades 9-12 in the U.S. during 2013, 17.2% of students seriously considered attempting suicide in the previous 12 months

COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many changes to our lives, including:

  • Uncertainty for the future

  • Loss of a parent/family member

  • Physical and/or sexual abuse

  • Financial pressures

  • Lack of a support network/social isolation

These are all factors of an increased risk for depression and suicide.

During 2020, the proportion of mental health-related emergency department visits among adolescents increased 31% compared with that during 2019.
