John Jay was an influential character in the development of the united states. He was born 1745, New York, to a wealthy family. After collage, he became a lawyer. The political career started when he joined the committee of correspondence. Initially, he campaigned for peace with britain. As war became more likely, he joined the war effort.
He was sent to spain as an ambassador. The goal was to get spain to give financial aid. At first, spain declined. France joined after the battle of Saratoga. Spain gave aid as an ally to france. Later in the war , he was sent to britain, to negotiate the treaty of paris. Thus, the revolutionary war had settled.
After the war, tensions remained between britain and the us. Britain was impressing our ships, so something had to be done. The treaty stopped britain from impressing our ships. However, decision was hated by the people. It did keep the us neutral until the war of 1812.
John Jay helped with the composing of the federalist papers. They argued for a stronger national government, while still giving the states some power. The argument he gave in the federalist papers, went on to mold the constitution we have today.
He was elected governor in 1795. He banned slavery from new york. Slavery was officially illegal in 1799. He himself was a slave owner until 1798.
