Medical Exemption

As part of the requirements of graduation, regular and successful participation in Physical Education is required by ALL students. 

Medical exemption(s) may be allowed in some instances provided appropariate documentation is submitted to the MEMS Health Office. 

In order to be MEDICALLY EXCUSED from Physical Education participation:

• • A doctor's note MUST be submitted to the school nurse, indicating the medical condition and restriction(s) regarding participation

  • Students may be excused for ONE class period with a written note from a parent or guardian

  • NOTE: Students excused from participation in Physical Education activity during the school day are NOT PERMITTED to participate/complete with their extracurricular sports team on that day. 

Students excused from Physical Education participation will  be expected to remain engaged during the class period in one of the following alternative roles:

• • Teacher Assistant (TA) - assist teacher with management of activity and/or lesson tasks

  • Referee (RF) - manage games/activities organized in class by applying the appropriate rules as an official 

  • Equipment Manager (EM) - distribute, collect, organize equipment and materials needed for activities

  • Peer Coach (PC) - organize strategy and coordinate tactics for team games or activities 

  • Silent Observer (SO) - record your observations of class games/activities during the period

  • Focused Learner - research 1 sport activity, read and complete accompanying worksheet
