Learning to Practice Overview:
In this section “Learning to Practice”, you will be able to view some of my in classroom assignments that I have had the opportunity to successfully accomplish. For the last two years I have dedicated my time in expanding my knowledge in Higher Education. This consists of both learning in both a classroom and in a work setting. These courses have taught me the importance of understanding challenges, and how to overcome them. I have also learned the importance of embracing your own identity and experiences throughout my journey in higher education.
Assignment #1 HED642G- Advanced Social Justice in Higher Education: My Social Justice Philosophy
In the course HED642G- Advanced Social Justice in Higher Education, I was able to engage in case study analysis and deep dive discussion of current social justice and diversity issues on college campuses. This course introduces specific cases and topics where institutions engaged with social justice issues and/or advancement of social justice. I was able to learn about specific challenges and assets that emerges when leaders commit to the work of creating truly just and inclusive campuses, how leaders develop partnership with campus and community stakeholders to build strategies that move institutions forward, and how to gain practice in enacting, assessing, and applying strategies. The assignment presented for this course showcases my social justice philosophy. I did this by utilizing the course reading Davis, T. & Harrison, L. M. (2013). Advancing Social Justice: Tools, Pedagogies, and Strategies to Transform Your Campus. San Francisco, CA. John Wiley & Sons Inc." in conjunction with other critical perspectives in order to continually develop a personal pedagogy that works in sync with my own theoretical learning, epistemological assumption, and interpersonal style. I was able to share my personal stories while articulating my passion, and commitment to this work. After reading this assignment you will be able to understand the importance of accessible education and how it’s a major issue in Higher Education.
Assignment #2: HED6750G- Supervision in Higher Education: Supervisor Relationship Assignment
In the course HED6750G-A Supervision in Higher Education, I learned the components of effective supervision while also exploring my own personal style of supervision. I was able to develop strategies to empower staff and build teams by engaging in hands-on assignments and activities to gain practical skills. I was able to accomplish this through case studies, video clips, role-play, articles, and discussions. This course allowed me to understand the roles partners, allies and adversaries play in a complication of goals and work assignments. This course allowed me to understand the importance of perception and reality. This course also provided an opportunity to understand our tendency and communication style. I was able to learn at my own strengths of leadership style by taking a The Four Tendencies Quiz and self-reflecting. This course allowed me to take the components and strategies I have learned in this course to apply to my graduation assistantship in higher education. I am fortunate enough to take a supervision course that has permitted me to have more self awareness.
Assignment #3: HED555G-A College Counseling and Advising
In HED555G-A College Counseling and Advising, I learned about the importance of student and advisor relationship. I was able to comprehend that without an authentic and genuine student/ advisor relationship there is no room for growth. I also learned about the importance of working collectively in community and how crucial it is to have all individuals play their parts. This consist of fulfilling one own responsibilities to ensure that as a group there is “No Man left behind”. This course provided me with the understanding that communication is important in this field. This course has taught me the importance advocating for students and being extremely vocal when working with students or others/ This course has brought great joy to my heart because as a Lawrence resident and Lawrence High School alumni, I love giving back to my community.
Recommendation:
These recommendation include some of my most favorable books. These books are representation of strength and courage. These books have taught me the importance of valuing others' perspectives, experiences, opportunities, and bravery. I recognize after complete each book separately, I would self-reflect on own values and morals to ensure that I am true to others, but most importantly to myself.
