Overview of the ACPA/NASPA competencies
"During the Academic Year 2009-2010, ACPA - College Student Educators International and NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education collaborated to establish a common set of professional competency areas for student affairs educators.". (ACPA/NASPA Competencies, 2015, p. 12)
The document presents 10 professional competencies that define essential aspects of student affairs educators, regardless of their functional fields or specialties. While effective student affairs practice requires a number of attributes, this document suggests 10 specific competencies. For every one of the 10 capability regions, portrayals are furnished alongside a bunch of discrete result explanations arranged as fundamental, intermediate, or advanced. Understanding the character of the 3 stages of results is important to their. Foundational results are meant to be exactly what their call implies—a requisite basis upon which intermediate and superior proficiencies in a competency place are built"
For the past two years I have managed to discover my passion in higher education and understand the standards to achieve these goals in supporting and guiding students. Some of these achievements consist of specific proficiency that are described in the ACPA & NASPA competencies document. As a first generation woman of color who has had the privilege to attend a PWI (Merrimack College), I have gained more knowledge and skills that have broadened my horizons.
I have had the opportunity to obtain competency in the following areas: Social Justice and Inclusion (SJI), Leadership (LEAD), Advising and Supporting (A/S), and Student Learning and Development (SLD).
Some of my biggest achievements have come from the opportunities I’ve gained. From becoming Academic Coordinator TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program at Salem State University to Project Coordinator for Fitchburg State University, Center for Diversity and Inclusiveness, I have learned that these opportunities have allowed me to showcase a number of attributes & competencies that inherit in my journey.
It is my honor to share some of my competencies highlights & and how I have been able to achieve them throughout my educational career.
To the right is a link to the competencies guide which provides a more in-depth overview.
