During the pandemic, many kids have been struggling more in school than they used to because most schools have gone either completely online or partly online. Many kids need the extra boost to get them where they need to be. There is a solution to that! It is called “The Covid NineTEEN Project.”
If you are very skilled in a subject and have some extra free time, it would be a great idea to join this program. Not only is it a great thing to do morally, but it is also a great thing to have on your college resume! In this program, teenagers are able to tutor elementary school kids.
Here is a quote from The Covid NineTEEN Project’s website home page: The current COVID-19 pandemic is keeping children at home, leading them to no longer have their usual time spent in school, sports, art classes, etc. The Covid NineTEEN project provides FREE teen-led activities and one-on-one tutoring meant to support elementary school students. Our teen mentors help keep children motivated and take the stress off of parents. We are a group of motivated teens who are using this valuable time to make a difference in the world. We hope to serve as mentors for elementary school children to help them fill their time and continue to flourish despite the uncertainty of the outside world.” The Covid NineTEEN project has also been featured on a few different news outlets, including “GMA3 What You Need to Know”.
If you are interested in joining the program to tutor or want to enroll an elementary student you know into this project, you can visit the website here. The program also has many activities, ranging from academic activities such as read-alouds, coding, and journaling, to art activities, and exercises. All of the teen mentors are teenagers in high school and college who have undergone an application process and orientation call to ensure we can provide quality, educational, and age-appropriate activities and tutoring sessions.
This project was founded by Sarah Shapiro and Skye Loventhal. They are both 17 years old. They began this project to help kids during the pandemic with their schoolwork. A quote from the “About” section of their website, by Sarah Shapiro, says, “I started this project in order to ensure that children are still motivated to achieve their academic, artistic, and athletic goals, despite all that is going on in the world right now with the global pandemic.” Skye Loventhal also says, “I wanted to join this project because I love working with kids and I wanted to give back during this time. I want to help students continue to achieve their goals and grow, despite the changed environment that they are adjusting to.”
