Fossils/Thermal Energy
S.O.L.E. Student Organized Learning Environment
45 minutes to 1 hour:
5 minutes- Explanation to whole class (Go over roles and questions below). This is calm, but no time to waste. Each group has a different question so ALL are really important!
1 minute- Give each group their printed question. Have to work together and stay calm and focused!
20 minutes- Students in groups of 4 designate their own roles (see below), ALL research (a few facts per group), Artist(s) draw/label/color, ALL can help build (Runner- only get building materials after group has facts written).
15 minutes- Gallery walk- Each group (from 1-6) gets about 1 minute to share. (And 1 minute to transition to the next group's area. Doing a calm 5 finger countdown to the next group and having students sit in front, kneel, stand in back, works well.)
2 minutes- QUICK, QUIET cleanup and back to starting area. Team members can help out the Runner for this part.
2 minutes- Reflection...What went well? What was hard?
ROLES (display for students to see while choosing):
ALL Researchers (Find information on your topic)
1 Journalist (write facts your team and you find on notebook paper)
1 Runner (Get/put back materials)
1-2 Artists (Draw/label/color on white paper to show information)
ALL Builders (Build to demonstrate information)
ALL Question Askers (Ask for others' ideas and if anything could be added or changed or if anyone needs help.)
Reporters (Share with class- 1 person or CLEARLY divide parts, such as 1 person shares facts, 1 person the drawing/labeling, 1 person the build)
MATERIALS PER GROUP: Chromebooks, 1-2 bins of Makerspace building materials, 1 notebook paper (facts), 1 white paper (draw/label), crayons, pencil
(Except Chromebooks, which all students have, only the Runner can come get the other materials from the table(s).
