This Month's News "worthy" Updates: Welcome Back to School! Welcome back to those who are joining our Northrop school family and welcome back to those who are returning! We are off to a GREAT start for this school year! I am so happy to be able to report that once again, I continue to notice students who arrive to Northrop in the morning with a smile on their face continue to have that smile on their face as they leave. This definitely warms my heart as I watch our students; new and veterans alike enjoying their school days here at Northrop!
As we began school, we reviewed our school-wide PBIS (Positive Behavior Incentive Systems) curriculum learning as we aline our elementary school expectations to mirror not only Northrop but all 5 of our elementary school buildings. Our focus continues to be our 3 R's; Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Ready. Included is our Portrait of a Bee competencies (introduced two years ago) which include how each student can be; a respectful citizen, a collaborator, a responsible decision maker, an effective communicator, an innovative problem solver and a resilient lifelong learner. Our research has shown that learning these skills and values prepare students for success, who will then possess these necessary skills as they grow into successful adults. As the school year continues, each month we will begin to sprinkle in intrical SEL: social-emotional learning for our elementary students.
In September, our PBIS/SEL learning focus will include; Zones of Regulation which gives students a common language to share and to manage their feelings and emotions. In addition, also in September; we will devote time to learning (and for some reviewing) and practicing Group Plan and Whole Body Listening. Both are techniques to encourage students to be engaged and present in their learning and to be respectful by showing kindness to others around them who are learning.
