Book Club with the School Counselors!
Join us This Month! in February...details below
We're excited to invite parents to join the Elementary School Counselors' Book Club this winter! We will be reading "The Gift of Failure" by Jessica Lahey, a powerful book that explores how allowing children to experience failure can foster resilience, independence, and a love of learning.
*We’ll offer both a virtual and in-person meeting in the month of February, so you can join us in the way that works best for you. This is a great opportunity to connect with other parents and educators while diving into an insightful read that supports student growth.
Please join us for our Book Club as we discuss "The Gift of Failure" by Jessica Lahey. (Please read the book prior to attending a meeting.)
We’ll be offering two opportunities to participate:
In-person Meeting: February 19th from 6-7 PM at Sidney Fenn Elementary
or
Virtual Meeting: February 25th from 6-7 PM (via Google Meet: meet.google.com/uyv-jukw-yuz)
Also; For those attending in person, childcare will be provided by volunteers from the high school’s Key Club. We hope you can join us for a meaningful discussion on how to support our children’s growth through the gift of failure. Please RSVP.
This Month's News "worthy" Updates:
Social Emotional Learning: Building wide PBIS
This month, our students will focus on important social-emotional skills, including:
Expected & Unexpected Behaviors (Week of 2/3): Students will review and practice identifying behaviors that are expected versus unexpected, with a focus on how actions impact others.
Hidden Rules (Week of 2/10): Students will learn about "hidden rules" – behaviors that are expected in different situations or locations, and why it’s important to adapt accordingly.
Flexible vs. Stuck Thinking (Week of 2/17): We’ll discuss how to be flexible in thinking, particularly when faced with challenges, and recognize when we become "stuck."
Conflict Management (Week of 2/24): Students will learn strategies for managing conflict through active listening, understanding different perspectives, and using respectful communication.
Through various activities, scenarios, and videos, students will engage in meaningful practice of these key skills to improve their social interactions and emotional growth.
February is a time to honor and celebrate the contributions of Black individuals throughout history. This month, we’re encouraging students to learn about influential Black figures, explore their legacies, and reflect on the values of diversity, equality, and inclusion.
As parents, you can help support this learning by engaging your children in conversations about the importance of Black history. Consider reading books by Black authors, watching movies, or discussing how different individuals have shaped our world in positive ways. This is a wonderful opportunity to nurture empathy, respect, and pride in cultural diversity.
Together, let’s celebrate the rich history and incredible contributions of the Black community, while fostering a sense of understanding and kindness in our students!
In celebration of Black History Month, we can inspire our students to embrace the power of positive relationships by learning from the wisdom and resilience of Black leaders throughout history. Using the resource 5 Ways to Help Children Build Positive Relationships from Big Life Journal, we encourage families to explore how kindness, empathy, and respect can help create strong, supportive connections that celebrate diversity and unity—values that are deeply reflected in the stories of many influential Black figures.
