MDI Drama Explores the Absurd with 2027 One Act Production: Ionesco's The Future Is In Eggs

Coming off of their state runner-up production of Kristin Doherty's Queens, the thespians of MDI Drama are poised to bring another challenging and thought-provoking production to the Higgins-Demas stage. 

The award-winning Mount Desert Island High School Drama program is thrilled to announce its 2027 One Act Festival selection: The Future Is In Eggs or It Takes All Sorts to Make a World by legendary avant-garde playwright Eugène Ionesco.

A masterclass in the Theatre of the Absurd, the play serves as a "kind of" sequel to Ionesco’s Jack, or The Submission. MDI Drama is no stranger to this specific narrative universe, having previously captured the 2018 Maine State Drama Championship with their acclaimed production of Jack. Returning to these characters nearly a decade later, the company promises a bold, thought-provoking, and visually rich continuation of the story that explores conformity, production, and the bizarre nature of human existence.

Performed at MDI High School's Higgins-Demas Theater, local audiences will have multiple opportunities to experience high-caliber educational theatre:

• Local Premiere Performance: Saturday, March 6 at 7:00 PM

• The Downeast Regional of the Maine Drama Festival: Weekend of March 13–14 (Hosted locally by MDI Drama; official performance times TBD)

• The Black Rose Showcase Performance: Wednesday, March 24 at 7:00 PM
