MDI Drama is thrilled to announce the upcoming production of the high school edition of the beloved musical "Mean Girls," based on the hit 2004 film written by Tina Fey. The musical features a book by Fey with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. With the rights exclusively available for the first time to high schools, this production promises to bring the hilarious and iconic story of teenage drama, friendship, and empowerment to the stage like never before.

Directed by MDI Drama alumnus Annie Leonardi, "Mean Girls" will showcase the incredible talents of the next generation of performers, bringing a fresh and vibrant energy to the beloved characters. With a talented cast of local high school students, this production will captivate audiences with its infectious humor, catchy music, and important messages about self-acceptance and standing up against bullying.

The high school edition of "Mean Girls" retains all the elements that made the original musical a global sensation, including the sharp wit and signature humor of Tina Fey's screenplay. The show features an unforgettable score composed by Jeff Richmond, with lyrics by Nell Benjamin, and book by Tina Fey. Audiences can look forward to hearing familiar songs such as "Apex Predator," "I See Stars," and "Stupid with Love."

Based on the screenplay by Tina Fey, "Mean Girls" takes a humorous yet poignant look at the trials and tribulations of high school life. The show follows Cady Heron, a teenage newcomer who finds herself thrust into the social jungle of North Shore High School. She navigates the perilous path of popularity and power, encountering a group of popular but cruel "Plastics," led by the infamous Regina George. As Cady struggles to find her place while preserving her true self, the story unravels with hilarity, insight, and plenty of unforgettable moments.

"We are beyond excited to present the high school edition of 'Mean Girls,'" said MDI Drama's Managing Director, Casey Rush. "This production provides an incredible opportunity for young performers to explore the iconic characters and powerful themes of the show while also entertaining audiences with a fresh perspective."

The creative team of Leonardi, tech directors Grey Burkart and Carlene Hirsch, music and pit director Christien Breau, and two newcomers, costume director and MDI Drama alumnus Flannery Dillon and choreographer Rehannah Baksh, will work to guide the techs and actors to transport audiences to the halls of North Shore High School. This production will not only showcase the incredible talent of the cast but also provide an immersive and visually stunning experience for theatergoers of all ages.

The performances of "Mean Girls" will premiere at the Higgins-Demas Theater at Mount Desert Island High School on Friday, November 10th.
